45 year old Kevin Barbieux shows us that "There is more to homeless people than being homeless."
I'm backing up my old projects right now and came across a group of art pieces I did 2 years ago. This one cracks me up because... well, here's the story:

I got these old print screens from a friend in hopes of using them to create shirts, but because they were so old and crusty, the screens were really bad and couldn't be used. Instead, I decided to use them as a canvas. So I took out my acrylic paints, cut up some magazines, and made this mixed media piece with "Be be sure to die... good looking" written on it (symbolizing the desire for fame, good looks, etc.). For effect, I decided I wanted to burn a candle at the bottom of the piece, to get a lot of wax built up. Having the purse in the middle of the piece like this reminded me of an old church icon, and it needed a vigil. I had to leave, so I placed the canvas with the candle inside the fireplace, and took off. I got home to find Jason really worried about my well-being because when he got home a few minutes later, the entire apartment was dark, there's a burning canvas in the fireplace with "Be sure to die.... good looking" written on it, and I'm nowhere to be found. Ah, good times at the Riverfront Condominium Rentals.

I just ordered some business cards for CityWise and came across these application guidelines from PsPrint. Good guidelines to follow when preparing files for print.

I know you're all dying to know what happened since my previous post, so I'll let you know that I picked up my computer this evening. They say it's fixed. I also saved another $1,000+ just today by having AppleCare because they had to replace my "logic board" (that's Mac-talk for motherboard). All in all, for the $249.99 I paid when purchasing the G5 over a year and a half ago, I believe I've saved over $2,500. Interesting that that's the same price as the new MacBook Pro...

For those of you that don't already know, I work on my computer. Yes, that's right, I spend time on my computer and have found myself amassing quite the grip of files, settings, applications, documents, passwords, pictures, movies, conversations, e-mails, and client archives. So, when my computer starting acting up like nobody's business, I quickly made a clone of my hard drive and then went about trying to fix the remainder. The next time I started my computer - it broke. Forever. The hard drive had to be replaced (thank the heavens for AppleCare, it didn't cost me a dime) and I was given my PowerMac G5 back with a clean slate. I became worried. If anyone has ever gone through setting your computer back up to how you had it before, it never works as planned. You forget programs, files, the speed of your mouse, which icon goes before which in the dock, etc. Well, thanks to the Apple Migration Assistant, it went without a hitch. Perfect. My applications still work, my e-mail settings work, my dock is the same size, and the Stewie widget that I have on my desktop still releases his pithy banter on request. I am so glad I have a Mac, backed up my files, and had such a smooth recovery.

Starting on this upcoming Monday, there is a faculty art show at PLNU's art department. There are 13 of us showing (of the 16 faculty) and the reception is on Monday (January 23) from 5-8pm at Keller Art Gallery. I'm not sure how long the show will be up, but I suspect at very least 2 weeks.
For those interested, I have up 10 pictures taken from an outting at MOMA in NYC back in August. These are all pictures of audience interaction/un-interaction with famous works of art inside the gallery space. The pictures in this collection online are 6 of the images I chose not to show, but made it to the final round.
Let me know if anyone needs more information about the reception or gallery hours/location.

Ready? Set? Boot!

I wasn't sure if I should put CHRISTIAN RIESE LASSEN's site in my Inspire section, or this page. After all, he is the self proclaimed premier marine artist of our time. A recent article in the Guardian tells of 77-year old Pinoncelli's hatred for a urinal. Along with a few other works by Duchamp, I had the pleasure of seeing this work at the Pompidou Centre a couple years ago in Paris and understand how this is a near-century old controversy. Gotta love it.

Invisible Children has a new site up. Javan, PLNU grad and current instructor for the advanced web design class, worked on the first one, and I believe Paul Drohan may have helped out with this second one seeing as it was done by Digitaria.

Beginning last night while trying to use MySync to sync up my bookmarks, calendars, keychains, etc. between my PowerBook and my G5, I updated the firmware to my Netgear router. The router stopped responding in the dead middle of the update, and after an hour on the phone with technical support this afternoon with a man that I could barely understand, was told that it doesn't work and I need to have it replaced. I pulled out my old wireless router, and I'm good to go - just slower. Would it be that simple to remain up and running? No. My G5 has decided to start crashing again, and this time would lock up and overheat on each reboot. I now have my PowerBook and G5 running, but they're still not synching. So I'm trying several products, listed below, to back-up my precious data. The kicker is, if I hadn't tried to be good and back-up, sync, and organize all of my files - I wouldn't have had the network and then my G5 crash in the first place.
PsyncX - free, running it right now...
Synchronize! Pro X - $100, so I'm waiting to use this as a last resort
Folders Synchronizer X - $40, may begin using for quick synchronization and not back-up
Drive Genius - got an "Awesome" rating in Mac Addict, so I'm giving it a looksie
DiskWarrior - what a name, need I say more?
BootCD - free donationware, use it to make a Mac OS X boot CD with applications
iMsafe - used this one for a long time, only problem is it can't copy all the system root files I need, or make a bootable disk
I've checked out many, many more, but have weeded a lot out. I'd like anyone's opinions or comments if they have a back-up procedure they use.

The guys needed a picture for the inside booklet of their new album that's coming out soon, so we took a trip to the Red Fox Room for an hour or so. The lighting isn't wonderful in there, so many turned out blurry, but the ambience, setting, and accomodations are perfect for the style IRF needs to accompany their design layout.

First up: Adobe Labs (Macromedia) introduces Lightroom. The contender to Apple's Aperture. Interesting that they would release this new project during the expo...
I downloaded the beta, and I must say, it's fast. There was no install, just the app. It has potential for sure. It's not as pretty, not as intuitive, and not as shortcut-filled, but hey - it's a Beta!

A new iPod remote with FM receiver.
And here it is!!! The MacBook Pro. What would be the PowerBook G5. With a dual core Intel chip. Up to four times the speed of the PowerBook G4. Eight times the graphics bandwidth. With built-in iSight for instant video conferencing on the move. And Front Row with Apple Remote to dazzle everyone in the room. Wait no more. MacBook Pro starts at just $1999. I'm getting one. Anyone want to buy a 15'' PowerBook? No, really...

Also an update to iLife and a faster iMac. Although, that's not really for me. But I'm sure iWeb, even though it will raise the bar for self-made sites, will start to be the baine of my existence. 5tUp1D n00bz.

In case you haven't already, head over to Turbo's Blog. Turbo is a bird. Brian Heersink is my good pal owned by Turbo.
Sticking with the post-graduate theme of marriage, a few more of my friends have gotten engaged, ready to be wed in the not-too-distant future. Jeff Unfried (not pictured) and Kate White (not pictured) in Roseville, CA on January 6th. Meeting during Jeff Kane and Erin White's wedding up in NorCal this past summer, Jeff and Kate hit it off but actually began their courting venture after Kate was required to contact Jeff to get my digital camera back to me after I left it at the wedding. One e-mail lead to another, and here they are.
Same week, different place: Ashley Morrow (not pictured) and Josh Hermsmeier (not pictured) became engaged to be married at Disneyland. They've been together for... geez... 2 years now? 3? Something like that. I wish them many children, enough quails to eat for a lifetime, and a Dance Dance Revolution-themed wedding ceremony.
Congrats to ya'll.
Also... Matt and Brenda recently received their newest sonograms and they're going to be having a little... baby... human female! I expect everyone to send them little blue booties, blue onesies, and blue Louis Vuitton purses. Why? Umm... get with the times - it's the 22nd Century, don't be so gender-biased.

I just got Aperture for my G5, and holy wow almighty, this is a great tool. Say goodbye to iPhoto if you have more than a thousand photos, and say goodbye to Photoshop, too, if all you do is shoot and do image correction. I'm stunned and can't wait to continue to use this puppy.
Head over to iN-PUBLiC.com and check out all the portfolios. Quick!

I'm normally really good about keeping calm, relaxed, and carefree when dealing with flight delays, cancellations, and layovers at airports - and I'm forced to do it again. This morning we attempted to leave the cabin in Leadville, CO at 7:30am, but (just like yesterday morning) the car wouldn't start. We finally got it started around 8:20am which gave us 3 hours - 2 hours to get to Denver and 1 hour before my flight out of Denver to Phoenix. Long story short, I was 5 minutes late to get my bags checked on to the plane and I'm sitting in the Denver International Airport for the next three hours to wait for the next flight. Then when I arrive in Phoenix I'm on standby for the flight to San Diego. *sigh* Could be a lot worse, but I was hoping to enjoy my free afternoon in San Diego. What shall I do instead? I'll chat online with Eric and Hanna, I'll look at trips to Bhutan, and I'll consider getting a new digital camera on eBay.

In case you were curious what I'm doing... I'm still in Colorado - Divide, Colorado to be exact. The 8 of us (Dad, Mom, Drew, Jo, Corrie, Alden, Hanna, and myself) drove up here on Wednesday night and have been staying at the cabin ever since. We've gone to Manitou Springs, walkin' around Golden Bell, playing Quelf, Loaded Questions, and Cranium, eating lots of food, watched Narnia, and yay, so much more. Hanna left to head back to Dallas yesterday morning, and tomorrow the rest of us will be heading to Leadville to go snowmobiling and then skiing on Tuesday. Wednesday morning I fly back to San Diego from the Denver Airport.
Oh yeah, and I'm sitting outside the closed Divide Fire and Rescue station, stealing their wireless. Mmwwwahhahaha.
