I've been working quite a bit recently, so even though I've posted quite a few pictures, I haven't spent the time to sit down and write what I've been up to. Just a quick recap of the last few days... Friday after working some in the morning I decided to make a trip out to PB for a photo shoot. I walked around for a few hours and took 233 pics. Friday night I went with Alison and Josh and met up with Stef at Air Conditioned (the place right around the corner from my apartment) where she was hanging out with people from her work. I was surprised - I had seen the sign outside before, and seen lines to get in, but Air Conditioned is really a hip little joint. It's very 70's - James Bond posters on the walls, vinyl couches, and big orange table tops. Saturday I went with Alison to Old Town to take more pictures, had a great meal at the Latin American restaurant next to Baja Lobster, and took a bunch of pics around the trolley stop. That night (after a nap) I went with Josh and Alison to Alison's ex-roommate's, Merrisa's, birthday party at Rock Bottom Brewery downtown. It was pretty crazy; we hadn't thought of dressing up, but everyone else in the city had. They had a big costume competition, a 70's cover band, and a transvestite Marilyn Monroe. Hard to beat that. Yesterday I had work to do in the morning, but the evening we went to the Wright's to celebrate Carl's birthday and socialize. Yes, John, we hung out.
After leaving class around 6pm, I pondered. To myself I said - "well, self, you could go home and work.." and then self said "no! I ain't goin' out like that!" So I called Chelsea and Aaron and we grabbed some foil from Vons and hit Chipotle for the annual Boorito special. Free burritos, can't beat that. Plus, you get to dress up in tin foil. After that we went over to Celeste's house for a while and helped with their haunted house. Much good time. Celeste had taken a bunch of bio-hazard bags from work, they black light and stringed their living room, and John ran around the front yard stomping while blowing a whistle and wearing a beekeepers mask. I was placed as the final guard for exiting the house - they had to stick their hand in a crock pot filled with "bio hazardous waste" (water with corn, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and bread) We're scary.
Usability awards are just a start
If everyone with a son or daughter (or grandson or granddaughter) working for a web designer put a note in their birthday card to say "and why don't you think about old people like me when you're designing your software", then it might just make them think again when they build a site with tiny fonts, miniscule icons and no accessibility aids.
Don't tell them, but I've created an RSS feed using this page for Newstoday's NTB posts.
Here is an RSS reader for flickr in Flash. Handy.

News Photos of the South Asia earthquake that's toll has officially risen to over 53,000 dead and over 75,000 injured (other figures show over 79,000 dead). I can't even fathom the destruction of land, life, and stability in Pakistan and surrounding nations right now. Not only that, and I don't know about where you live, but I'm not even hearing anything about it in local news or conversation.

I didn't have a picture of Purg with Meredith (and the pics I do have of Meredith I think I would get scolded for using) so I found the most manly picture of Purg that I've got. Because they're engaged! Purg just called to see if I'd be able to meet him in San Jose on July 22nd for their wedding ceremony. Congrats to the happy Kansan couple.

Just remember that overuse of a handheld device can cause Blackberry Thumb.
My great industrial tech-head roommate and friend Eric and his amazingly considerate and caring bride-to-be, and my good friend, Tiana have been dating for the last couple years and are now engaged. I couldn't be happier for them and look forward to seeing them in the times ahead.

Not really the best design work, but Chaz Maviyane-Davies's ideology is inspiring.
Hey Jer, did you know if you Google your name, this site comes up first?

Very brief, but nevertheless, odd.
I was Chuck Norris, and I was driving a boat. There were two boats that were trying to dock, but they were criminals. Needless to say, I had to fight them and then drove my boat up the ramp, off a girl's head, and through a plexi-glass window. Oh, and earlier I had a vaccum cleaner contest.

Hello everyone, I am doing wonderful in China!!!!!!! Rehearsals are going very well and VERY tiring. We rehearse about 8 hours a day and just do it all over again the next. The show is up and running after the first week!!!!!!!!! We just have cleaning rehearsals for the next two until the show actually opens November 1. I was asked to understudy the roles for Riff and Action today, so I am really excited about that becuase over the course of a year I will be able to play those roles everywhere. I enclosed some pictures for you to see. I hope all is well.

That's right, now with computers you don't need to actually write a letter, or send e-mail, you can use L-Mail to write a letter, and mail it without having to actually write a letter!
Really though, I could see this helping save money on postage for international mailings.

In addition to my regular "event"-oriented photo sets, I have started a stream of consciousness picture set. This group will include pictures that I take throughout my day that, when viewed as a whole, will give an overall view of my life and activities. Since I have my new camera that I have with me at all times, I have a greater tendency to snap a spontaneous picture that I feel can portray a significant glance at the time and place, or towards a social commentary. I'm not going to post an entry on this website every time I post a picture (pictures will be black and white only) and I'm not promising to upload these pictures on a set chronological basis, but will attempt to post a single image every so often (most probably each time I upload the images on my camera). I'll also explain the timing, setting, and other subjective importance of the image for your understanding.
I'm considering starting a web page with these images, which I will also use to sell medium sized photo albums of my work (probably 30-40 page books for around $30), but this is the beginning to this endeavor.
Please feel free to comment and question. If nobody's going to look at these, that's fine by me - even this website itself has been a great tool that allows me to gain a snapshot view of my life over the last couple years - but knowing others find some kind of enjoyment out of them will make it all the better.

I received this e-mail from a guy named Patrck today and wanted to pass it on:
I think it is awesome that you ran ISO50 on your site. Scott is a friend of mine, and we use the same screenprinter and warehouse. I recently started up Owl Movement, a limited edition artist tee website. I have almost sold through my series 1 shirts, and I will be printing up series 2 here soon. Series 1 includes tees by Secret Pizza Party, Jon Knox Griffin, and Huskworks. Series 2 will feature a whole new batch of artists including TADO, Graphic Airlines, 1988, and C86.

I usually have a very plain, non-obtrusive desktop background. My files, although on ocassion becoming disheveled, have their proper gridded location and alignment. But what does my computer look like at this moment? I'll show you. And it's all thanks to this great widget I found for Konfabulator of San Diego anchorman, Ron Burgundy.
When I click on him, he says "I'm in a glass cage of emotions!" Splendid.

Can you imagine the outcome of mixing the TactaPad with a pressure sensative Wacom Tablet? You could digitally, literally, do photo "re-touching". Dodge, burn, smear, et al. by using your hands. Make it so!

Just got back from the Doves concert at House of Blues downtown. Since nobody I could find has any idea who the Doves are, I ended up going solo, but it actually worked out quite well because the seats available in the upstairs area at the venue were all singles, so I got a second row seat the whole show. The band Marjorie Fair played first - quite good. I believe they're from LA, and this was their first time to play SD. Good opening act for Doves. The lighting and video that went along with Doves was great; especially during their first and last songs. I guess it's a theme recently that I'm a fan of the beginning and the end of concerts. Perhaps because the bands do their best then on purpose? Or maybe because I'm paying more attention? Either way, Doves did great and I'm definitely glad I caught them while they are "State-side".

Oh yes, and HOB is quickly becoming my favorite venue in SD. It's intimate, yet has good bands come through (be sure to check out Fiona Apple on November 28th - tickets on sale this Saturday... $40 is steep, but it is Fiona...) and the accoustics are fantastic.

Friday morning I had to rush and get a media loop done for another symposium something-or-rather that Pfizer was putting on, but was just in time to catch Kris online and discover that MTF was playing a show up in LA that night! They come to CA so frequently now they forgot to clue me in. So I was done with the loop by 11:30am and on my way driving up to LA by 1:30pm (in the meantime I was also able to finish some e-mails, eat, and give the futon to one of the Spanish speaking families in our congregation at church). This drive was supposed to take 2 hours. I knew it wouldn't because it was Friday afternoon, but what lay in store for me was a grueling extra hour and a half in traffic. I arrived at the Knitting Factory on Hollywood Blvd. at 5:15pm and after spotting Elvis and Marilyn at a local sandwich shop, I met up with Minutes Too Far at the Knitting Factory.

They went on second after Oh No Not Stereo (local scream-punk-rock boys) and blew the place down. They really do get better and tighter each time I see them. Militia Group was supposed to be at the show (whom they've received an offer from recently), but Rory had to fly up to NYC for some meeting. After the concert I walked outside to find Karie Vix waiting. She took the bus in the complete opposite direction and ended up on the other side of town. So she missed the concert. We waited around for a while and then a bunch of groupies and a couple of the bandmates, Karie, and I went to a restaurant somewhere off Melrose. Got out of there around midnight and then Karie and I went to the place where she's been staying while she has her job in LA. Slept there and then I made my way to Jason and Winter's on Saturday morning.

The White Trash Party
Felt like home. We spent the entire day trashing J and Big-Dubs house as best we could in preparation for the party. Motor oil cans, tires, old bikes, "used" toilet paper, stolen shopping carts (thanks to Friberg and yours truly), an '85 'stang on the lawn, soda in the washing machine, Paula Jones vs. Tonya Harding Celebrity Boxing framed picture, and a "Dear Dale, I'm leaving you. Love, your sister Mandy" note were just a few of the decorations that adorned their house last night. The majority of the attendees were dental students from Jason's classes, their wives, and "the hygiene girls" from the school. I can't describe this party in detail, but what white trash party would be complete without Skynard, a catfight (yes, really, twice), Krispy Kremes with Easy Cheese, Jamie the Britney Spears look-a-like, Willis - the guy that passed out after throwing up Skoal on himself in the front yard, and a shopping cart turned drag racer - "What you got here is yer intake valve. And this here, that's your tack'O'meter." Good, crazy, trashy times.

After cleaning up the morning after what has been referred to as White Trash Party Rita; Jason, Winter, James, and I played Masterpiece, toyed around with Buster (J and Winter's new kitten) and then made a trip to Chipotle.

the unseen video - milosh - you make me feel
This is the most amazing thing I've seen in probably the last year. I'm always searching and researching, trying to keep up to date and scratch the itch of modern design, and this blows me away. Precisely the field of study I'm interested in. Wow, again.
The Unseen Video,
a weather controlled, dynamic music video for Mike Milosh's - You Make Me Feel.
The Unseen Video is much more than a normal, static music video. It is a video that is affected by the weather and local time from the position of the viewer.
We want to create new synergies between the music, the video and the surroundings of the viewer. Every little change in your environment ensures that you will never see the same video twice. The look of the video might slightly change within an hour, but will have a whole new character in a few months.

I must admit, I was frantic this afternoon when I accidently misplaced the tickets to tonight's show. I spent a good 4 hours in pure agony and panic with the thoughts that not only would I not be able to witness the greatness that is Sigur Ros, but also that I would not be able to make good on the selling of said tickets to my eBay buyers. Luckily I sifted through the catastrophe that is my room and was able to locate them in time to make it to class and downtown to Copley Hall by 7pm. Roger ended up joining Renee, Chelsea, Stevie, Shannon and I for the concert - and might I just add, in the best seats in the house. When we handed our tickets to the usher to be seated, those were his exact words. We're so special. Although the remainder of the concert was entertaining, harmonious, and, at those sparse grandios times, enthralling, I found myself fairly tired throughout the event. I think this is mainly due to the fact that I listen to them before I go to sleep or when I'm trying to calm myself, so just call me a Pavlovian fool. Far and above, the highlights were anytime the semi-translucent white screen was dropped for a Platonic shadow-fest. Awe inspiring to say the least. Sadly, the only time this effect was used was during the first and last songs. Bookending the concert. If you have a chance to check out Sigur Ros in concert, I highly suggest it. It may cost you a pretty penny, but those bow-on-guitar smashing Icelandics can really pull your heart strings.

I've started working with a new client through Aquent - LogoYes - which has taken up about 15 hours this week, so you add this on top of class, 5xtechnology, and having James in town, it's been a week. I've done plenty, but let's see if I can do some highlights... Thursday I picked up Chelsea from work and ate Niko's and watched Dogtown and Z-Boys for a couple hours (while getting rid of my headache). After that I went over to Kane's and played pool with Friberg and Kane for a bit, then played poker, then played Worms Armageddon until 3 in the morning. It was a school night, too! Today I worked, had meetings, the norm - then after taking a nap I went to the Basileia House and a whole big group of us went to Albertsons and hung out all evening. Spontaneous gathering of a large group. Good times with telephone pictionary.

Sold my Sigur Ros tickets tonight for a nice profit ($100+), and I'm excited to go on Monday.
Bought a bedroom set, too. How grown up am I? What do I do with my money? I buy a 6 piece Venice Cherry Oak bedroom set. It was time to say goodbye to the 1970's pimp waterbed. It's been fun, but she just takes up way too much room in my cramped quarters. If nobody wants it by next Friday, I'm putting it out by the trash.
I plan on making a stream of consciousness photoset on my flickr account soon. I've taken 1,000 pictures just this month. I'm a photophreak.
This weekend I plan on cleaning up my room in preparation for the arrival of the furniture, working on LogoYes projects, and possibly moving my desk in to the living room to make space. We'll see. Uhh... and I also have nursery on Sunday morning. That is all. Good night.
