First time's a charm

I got my first link on Newstoday on this day. Not for something that I designed, or a site I created - but for my random thought of searching Google for DSC00001.jpg. I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry.

Oh well - just wait until PLEENK comes out. Then we'll be getting all kinds of posts. Perhaps.

My music

Now you can see what music i'm listening to RIGHT NOW - just look over in the "David's listening to" section. That's right - it's updated every time I play a song.

How cool is that??

I did this using Kung-Tunes, a lot of searching through forums, and help from Chamblee. Thanks ya'll.

Really

No really, I'm going to bed now.

Days end

Checking this blog out specifically makes me want to add a large links section on the side of my page. I'll do that. Later. Now, I'm going to try and sleep. Oh ya, I forgot to mention - last night I tried to go to sleep at 1:45am and did the "sleep for 15 minutes and then wake up and try and go back to bed" thing for about 5 hours. Then stayed awake for an hour, then another couple hours of broken sleep, then finally got about 2 1/2 hours of sleep from 11:30am until 2:00pm. Very frustrating. I'm not all that tired now, and luckily I feel accomplished from what I did for work today, but I still didn't enjoy that experience. Wish me luck as I head off now.

Dream log - 9-28-2004

I was with some friends during a camp outing on Point Loma's campus looking for a place to play basketball when we stumbled across a court that was covered in water. We played for a while, just shooting around, until a friend of mine stopped by and we started talking about how he's heard about the secret mummy in the bottom of the Louvre Tomb, but he's never actually seen it. I realized "oh, I left my suitcase there behind one of the mummy tombs, and I haven't been there in a while, I'd like to go." So we left and showed up downstairs in a place that looked like a mixture of the Pantheon and the tombs from Indiana Jones and the search for the holy grail. We walked around looking at the different statues and modern art, it was very nestalgic - I remembered everything from my trip to Europe, until we came upon a sarcophagus that was pushed to the side and a door behind it. We walked through and I found my suitcase with the papers that I needed behind one of the mummy's sarcophagus. From there I agreed to go back to a room, that was underground, and talk to my friends for a while. My suitcase was suddenly my backpack and in it I had my wallet, keys, laptop computer with transparent powering dock, cell phone, and books. They all wanted to see my different items so one friend took the laptop and started walking in to the kitchen. I followed him holding the transparent powering dock and said asked if his was transparent. Nope! I went back in and realized in the meantime the other people in the room (not sure who any of them were - Steven Charles may have been one - a guy from elementary school) had stolen everything else in my backpack. So I got really pissed and started yelling until they gave it back. They kept trying to steal stuff as I was standing there, but I caught them each time. Suddenly I was in a bed and I realized we needed to move the trailer/mobile home. I woke up my mom and told her. So we moved it to a curb that was near Eldon Lyon Park in Bethany, OK and parallel parked it so we could sleep some more. My dad had to go to 7-eleven that was around the corner (really it is) and get something, but we all stayed in the trailer. Next thing I know we were preparing for a hiking trip and a bonfire. Matt, someone else, and I went out on the top of the mountain to scout out an area to make a bonfire the next night, but the area they chose had a trail that was WAY too steep to be carrying backpacks and lumber, but they didn't care. I walked up the other side of the trail, where it was snowing, and found a great view of the mountains and down into the valley. There was snow everywhere. I was standing there enjoying the scenery when Scott Regester (youth pastor from BFC) started shooting a Nerf gun at my head. Haha! I loved it! I grabbed the Nerf bullets and threw them back at him. Then we were in the house at the bottom of the mountain, asleep again. We woke up and it was only my family there this time. I remember there was an elevator to the basement. My brother was acting really crazy and kind of mad - then he was flying a prop plane around in the sky. Of course I had to call the Air Force on him, so they came and chased him down. I followed the dog fight for a while, pointing out where he was flying to the different F-16's and helicopters that stopped in front of the house (it was night time so hard to see) until I noticed Drew's plane wasn't around anymore. I went inside to do laundry and then saw one of the Air Force pilots. "Did you get him?" "Well kind of - we had to shoot his plane down with an adrenaline shot." "Oh, well ya, of course." Suddenly I heard Drew fighting one of the other pilots in one of the other rooms in the house. "Why can't this entire room be a color?!!?" running in to another room "OR THIS ONE?!?" Then my brother burst in the back room where I was folding his sleeping bag, ran over to Dusty's cage (his rabbit from 7th grade), got in the cage with Dusty, and then came out with the rabbit. The adrenaline shot that shot down his plane had made him really really hyper and he had been running around town getting tattoos of extremely vibrant colors on his chest and arms. He was deciding on what tattoo to get next then ran out of the room (after putting the rabbit back) into the hall. I then told the pilot standing by me he'd better watch out because "Drew knows karate - he's a brown belt and is hoping to get his black belt very soon." And he is..... and he is.

Montag

Finishing up some revisions on the Siemens probject(s), had a meeting with Fabrice and Burak here - we went to the Greek restaurant in Normal Heights to eat lunch, worked a little more, tried to get the audio-in to work on this computer, then spent the remainder of the night here. Michelle, Eric and I talked to Kelly again tonight over Skype, which allows you to use your computer to talk to people on a landline. It's cheap - only 16.2 cents EU a minute to talk to Barbados, but it's not the greatest quality. It was really laggy and cut in and out. Half the price though! We'll see about using this regularly... I talked to Kel for probably 15 minutes or so, but didn't really have as much to talk about as when I got to talk to her last week. I think we pretty much got a grasp of what was going on in each others lives last week, so tonight we were just chatting. I felt kind of bad because it felt like we were trying to come up with things to talk about, and the bad reception didn't help much, but it was still good to talk to her. She said she's going to get a cell phone ASAP, so hopefully that will make things easier to keep in contact with her. During/after talking to Kelly we played a little Super Monkey Ball, then sat around and talked for a while. F Marry Kill anyone? Ya. A shard of glass? What?!? Well that was the evening. I'm in kind of an "off" mood, so I'm going to watch Scrubs and go to bed early - 1am is early. Gut nacht.

Arts critics | Rwview: Mary Heilmann and Beatriz Milhazes:

"Her technique, painting on plastic sheet and transferring the elements onto the canvas as though she were making a collage, allows her to take the painting a step at a time, but to produce what she once called 'a fine surface containing many things compressed'. This is a beautiful phrase. I once described her work as Matissean. But she comes from Brazil, not France. Matisse had to go to north Africa to re-invigorate his art; Milhazes lives in a country where otherness and strangeness can be found at home."

Jenn, Scott, Stef and some other people are down at Hennsey's right now, but I had a bit of a headache and just really didn't feel like being in that kind of an environment tonight.

We went to Julian today - left at 9:30am and got back at 6:00pm. When we got there we met up with Jason and Winter (us being Matt, Brenda and I) at Miner's Diner then headed out a couple miles to pick apples. 5 bucks for a bag - not bad. I enjoyed messing with the guy that was there - he's probably 19 or so - that was helping us out. I was acting like a backwards hick the whole time, but very odd at the same time. For instance I asked if they had any oranges because the picker I had said "do not place orange 'picker' on ground." He said it's because the claw is orange. Then said they used to have oranges around orange county and they had lemons in Lemon Grove. I said something about how that makes sense why they named it that and that's why they needed to buy orange pickers. Made absolutely no sense but the guy went along with it. Much fun. After picking apples we went back in town and grabbed a bite to eat at a mexican restuarant that - regretfully - wasn't good at all. At least mine wasn't. I'm not very picky at all when it comes to food, I don't think, as long as it's something I don't hate (doesn't contain olives, mushrooms, stir fry, etc). But this was just a bad burrito. Sad. Post-lunch we went wine tasting in town for 5 bucks. Not bad! We tried probably 10 or 12 different wines - from Merlot and Carignan to a Port and a Elderberry Fruit Wine. Good stuff. Then we went to the candy store where I got some apple cider and got hit on/hit on the apple cider girl (Matt and Jason were trying to live vicariously through me and get me to ask her for her number but I swear she's 18), then went to a used book store, sat around and ate apple pie, enjoyed the calm mountain scenery, then headed back.

This evening I spent alone listening to music and cleaning my apartment.

Enough of that - feast your eyes on this.

THX 1138

Just got back from the NBH where we watched THX 1138 (1971) - George Lucas's first feature film. Based on ideas from "1984", "Brave New World", "The Prisoner", "Planet of the Apes", etc. - this is the traditional 1960's/70's escape from "anti-utopia". Very subdued and static, not much dialogue. A full rising action, climax, and resolution, but still dissorienting and hard to follow. The new release (2004) we watched has some definite CG that wouldn't have been possible in 1970, but we aren't exactly sure how it got added, when, etc. Still a good movie to watch at least once - I probably won't watch it again as it is drawn out - but I can definitely see where it has influenced many various movies such as "Gattaca" (my favorite Sci-Fi), "Equillibrium", and movies like that. I'd recommend it for the movie or Sci-Fi buff.

Dream log - 9-24-2004

I had to stand outside in the rain next to some buildings that served as a food court. They didn't let me stand underneath the roof or near the different little food stands because I'm vegetarian. So I would try and sneak in and act like I was going to buy a Slim Jim, but they would kick me out. Finally, after a while of dancing in the parking lot, a van comes around and mom leans out and says "ok you can go in now". I head inside and there is a counter at a concession stand. This is the counter from the concession stand at a very old youth retreat that I went to in jr. high. On the counter were around 5 or 6 different kinds of soda pop - Barq's root beer, Dr. Pepper, etc. And above them was a chaulk board with different phrases. The person behind me at the cash register said "you gotta sing them" - so my friend and I that was there with me, Audrey Ngyuen, had to figure out what the songs were and sing them in order to buy the pop. Or coke - if you're from the midwest. I only remember one of them - i sang this to the 5, very jolly, dancing employees behind the counter:

"Baby won't you goooooo-oooooohhhh soooo lonnnnggg,
don't want to beeee, sooooo loooonnngggggggg."

No idea where that came from, but I definitely knew it in my dream. There were a few others that I remembered in my dream, just not now after waking up. So we got to buy 4 out of the 2 drinks because we couldn't figure out the one for Barq's Root Beer or one of the others.

The end.

Engrish.com

Not to gloat, but...

I did some work. I looked at some sites. I finished a project for Steve. I ate a veggie burrito for lunch (at 3pm) and watched Ellen.

Then at 5pm Michelle came and picked me up to go downtown in order to water our friend Katie Reed's (Katie Rosta until last Saturday) plants in their studio apartment. Very cool place - nice big studio apartment with a balcony and a sweet view. I'm jealous, but she definitely pays for it. Way more than I'm willing to! Hopefully I'll get to see Katie sometime in the near future - she was one of my art department/graphic design class buddies. Many a late night Kinko's runs and Mac Lab parties with Katie. After watering the plants we went to Starbuck's so Michelle could get a carmel something and then sat around for about 10 minutes or so. When Kelly called!!! We rushed up to Katie's apartment to use the landline there, but Michelle left her calling card at home, so we jumped in the car and headed back to her place to call Kel back (after placing a GLT, gay and lesbian times, magazine in Katie's freezer for when they get back from their honeymoon... mmmwhahaha). Michelle talked to Kel for about 40 minutes or so while I watched Ace Ventura with Christie then talked to my mom and sister on the phone (found out my sister has a nasty cyst that may need to be surgically removed, AND that my Uncle will be having quadruple bypass open heart surgery next week). Then I got to talk to Kelly for about 15 minutes (maybe it was longer, time flies) on the phone!!! It was SO good to hear her voice and just chat. It's different to hear everything via e-mail or third hand - nice to hear some different points of view and hear it first hand. Of course I wanted to spend the rest of the night talking to Kelly, but I was using up Mich's minutes, so I handed the phone back off and that was that. She's going to be in Barbados (poor Kelly - having to stay at a beachfront hotel and go to raeggae bars for the 2 weeks she's in Barbados) for another week, then on Thursday she'll head back to Grenada. She said she's hoping to get a cell phone real quick, but isn't sure because they don't even have power - much less cell phones! I'm going to have to use Skype and talk to her again... maybe more than once... before she leaves on Thursday, just to make sure. Well after that Michelle and I drove around to find food and were extremely giddy because we got to talk to Kelly. We're dumb kids. We found a Little Caesar's near my home that had a $5 for a large pizza special, so we split a pineapple pizza and watched some Scrubs. That's the day to the end! Now I'm going to... do some work maybe?

Work to do

The last couple days I haven't had much work to do. Since we finished the CT66 we've been working on PLEENK (CMS lite) and trying to get our crap together with other stuff - making a few other internal projects, but I haven't really had much to work on. So I've painted, and kept up to date online, and had a meeting, and that's about it. Yesterday I met with Steve Williams for a while, who may have a contact for one of our projects. The meeting was for a small template mailing project for him - so I have that to do today, and I also just got an e-mail from Harry at Sulic and we're starting on another project (C66 - modified CT66), and I have some work to do for Byron. So I'm going to eat a bowl of Blueberry Morning cereal and work.

Oh, and yesterday Michelle, Eric, and I went to Olive Garden - I hadn't eaten all day and I got the never ending pasta bowl. I ate 3 bowls full, plus salad and about 6 breadsticks. Man, I was sooo stuffed. Hurtful. It was good though. So good. After O.G. we came back to mi casa and watched Robin Williams Live on Broadway HBO special (funny parts, crude parts) then Scrubs. I then went hot tubbing with Chad, Kim, Steve, Dave, Meredith, and Laura. Good times.

OK - time for cereal.

Riding around the mountain view

Night time bike rides can be very peaceful. I just got back from one that lasted about 30 minutes. Around 8 miles. Just took my time, went up to Kensington then rode up and down little streets around Normal Heights. I just needed to get some fresh air - and I found I didn't have anything else to do so I'd get some excercise in the meantime. I found a street off Mountain View Rd. (there's a Mtn. View East, West, North, not sure about South) called Litchfield that is really cool. Just a quaint, very narrow street that dead ends around a coldesack with an amazing view of Mission Valley and Qualcomm. I love finding little areas like that. Not sure why, it's not like they're really useful, but it's nice to know they exist. I wouldn't mind buying a house over there - you know, the million dollar variety. Amazing that that street is only about 1 mile from our apartment and I'm sure the houses range in the millions. After spending a day mostly in painting, listening to music, and very little actual "work" - this was a nice ending. I don't feel really productive because I can't see any kind of monetary ends to my means from today, but at least I got some art done. Horray for that.

Kelly in Barbados

We've found that Kelly is currently in Barbados recouping. In the next few days or weeks (?) she'll be re-trained for disaster relief and then sent back to Grenada. Even though she's not coming back to us, and even though she'll be in a newly acquired disaster area; we're glad she's safe and being taken care of. It's definitely a change in plans! - but as Michelle said last night: she doesn't have another Peace Corps experience to compare this to, so it's the best one she's ever had!

YKK all up on your zippers

YKK:

Q1.
What does 'YKK' stand for?

A1.
YKK was founded in Japan as a zipper manufacturing company in 1934 by Tadao (pronounced in English as Tah-dah-o) Yoshida. In the early years, Mr. Yoshida's company carried his name; it was called Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha--or 'YKK' for short. (That long Japanese name translates roughly into English as 'Yoshida Company Limited.') Over the years, the letters 'YKK' were stamped onto the zippers' pull tabs, and thus YKK became known as the Company's trademark.

Dream log - 9-20-2004

Brief - don't remember much:

I was at an ATM machine when a man came up and tried to rob me. There was a struggle and the gun went off and killed him. My friend Kris and I stood around for a while then a white van passed us by and started shooting at us. Apparently this was the van the guy jumped out of to rob us. We ducked behind a wall and were unharmed, so we came back out. Anothe rwhite van came buy and guys leaned out the window with AK-47's and a shotgun and started shooting again. They missed us, but this time we called the cops. First a fire engine came, but it was for a fire down the street. Then a police car - that was shaped like a fire engine - came and we pointed to the alley where the van went. Soon after we saw the van again and then the police "car" chasing it. They arrested the men. We went down to the police headquarters - which was in the middle of the mall - and talked to the guys in the van. One was latino and one was black - as we talked it turned out they didn't mean to shoot at us, so I followed them out of the building - the mall, we walked through the "home decor" section of JC Penny's to get out - and on the way I had to act gangster and convince the two guys that I'm just a dumb white guy that doesn't know any better. "You know us stupid crackers."

Powering my camera

I left the power adapter to my nice digital camera at home. So for the last 3 weeks I haven't been able to use it. There hasn't been anything that's gone on that I would have really needed it for, but I still like taking pictures! Luckily I called my family yesterday - it's hard to get ahold of the parents... - and my mom found the cord. She is supposed to be sending it with my watch I left. Now I'm going to call to remind her.

I have a problem - there are too many kinds of graphic design I love and want to experiment with - thus I never feel like I've accomplished anything at all. This site by Pes is one of the kinds of video I've love to do - just random stuff!!! Funny little shorts for no reason whatsoever. Ahhh - I need to keep this stuff in mind!

Music Player

OK I've added the much anticipated David Overholt.com Music Player at the top of the site.

Currently there are 5 tracks:

Explosions in the Sky - Glittering Blackness
Manitoba - People Eating Fruit
Cinematic Orchestra - Swallow
Do Make Say Think - Soul and Onward
TV on the Radio - Young Liars

By default the music is off (I hate going to a site and having to automatically mute the music) - but it should be easy to figure out how to start.

New picture albums have been added as well.

Hand Carved Graphics

Update

I've placed a links section on the right sidebar area. Take a look at the photo gallery - I have 3 albums in there right now (one in each section: Friends, Nature, Art) but will be adding more very soon. It's just that it's 3:30am and I'm going to play Tennis with Scott in the morning at 10am. i also plan on putting a music player in the sidebar soon - filling it with different bands and songs I find.

Oh ya, and tonight I went out to eat with Rachel's sisters, dad, jennie daniels, and Mary's bf Rob. We went to the Red Sea restaurant - Ethiopian food. Very good - did a number on my stomach though. After that Stef and Scott picked me up to go to Garden State but Stef had to go to work so I went over to Rach's and saw Jenna, Christina, and Erica and watched the last part of 13 Going On 30 with Jessica Garner. Ya, I know - but it was something to do.

Also today Fabrice and I got the CT66 demo done and also the quiz (that was due on Tuesday) by 2pm Friday. We rocked their pants off over at Sulic.

Nighty nite. Enjoy the pics.

You Need Some Learnin'

Another thing I was thinking about during the You Need Some Learnin' meeting at Michelle and Christie's is when John spoke about Christians removing themselves from the political structure, and facilitating lobbyists to fight for what could be seen as a common good or a Christian stance if connected to the Church.

My thought was this - what is the difference between being engaged in a public political system as an individual, and, on the other hand, excluding yourself from the system and having someone else lobby for your interests? Couldn't having an external affiliate (lobbyist) for the internal group (the Church) be seen as condoning their actions because you define them as not part of the group?

In other words - isn't asking someone to lobby for the Church like saying "it's ok if you do this, you aren't one of us" - thus being inhospitible and ultimately seclusion-ist?

And to take a recent quote from Hauerwas on Eric's blog:

"If you ask one of the crucial theological questions--why was Jesus killed?--the answer isn't `because God wants us to love one another.' Why in the hell would anyone kill Jesus for that? That's stupid. It's not even interesting. Why did he get killed? Because he challenged the powers that be. The church is a political institution calling people to be an alternative to the world. That's what the cross is about."

Hard to be an alternative to the political institution, remove yourself from the institution, and then ask someone else to change that institution from the inside out....

Another side note: seclusionary should be a word.

Topic

What is the difference between having the ability to save someone's life - and chosing not to, and killing someone?

Comments welcome.

Sometimes I think: "wow, food is expensive! i hate it - why does something that we have to do to survive have to cost so much money. we're forced to spend time working so we can pay lots of money to do something that we have to do to stay alive. i hate it."

But then I realize I'm talking about food.

And I love food.

So it gets ok.

The Reinhardts

Blog - this is the new journal for Tiana's brother, Stephen - Stevie, and his wife, Shannon - Shan. They just moved in to the attached 2nd unit of the NBH. They've been completely redoing the place - which makes Stef happy having people in there that actually want to help fix it up - and it looks terrific! Shannon is an artist and we got to talk shop for a bit about some of her techniques. Cool stuff - I'd like to see more.

I wish I had money to fix up our place. Then I remember we're in an apartment so painting the walls or putting up large objects on the walls means you have to repaint and fill large holes. Not fun. Oh well, i'm still working on a new painting and some photo manipulations for the walls - atleast we'll have SOMETHING up on these white walls.

Tonightish

I ordered a pizza from Howard's Pizza (affectionately refered to as Howie's) this afternoon. After Eric got off work at 5pm he picked it up and we ate it. So that was lunch/dinner-ish. I worked a little more, read the beginning of Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, did a little painting, watched a little TV, and sat around. Around 10:45pm I met up with Stef, Tiana, Renee, and Renee's friend Jason at the Ken Club in Kensington to watch Starline Theorie perform. I dig their music a lot - especially since they added a rapper for some of the songs. After the gig I dropped Stef off at the NBH (New Basileia House) - I was borrowing Eric's car - then made a quick Von's run.

That was tonight.

I'm still a little thrown off right now after a couple e-mails I received earlier today (one from a client, the other about Kelly leaving Grenada) and the headache I have doesn't help, but maybe sleep will.

Farewell.

Castles

Tuesday

Ya, I went to Bread of Life tonight, what of it?

There were around 18 people there to help out from PLNU, so I basically delegated jobs and then kept the peace. I spoke to Colin about purchasing castles in Germany and he said if I got a castle without the group he's involved with - that they will take over my castle. I will be asleep and all of a sudden there will be a ladder falling at my window. So we both decided armor, horses, and swords will be the first things purchased. This gave me a good idea though - if I wanted to keep my castle a hostel, then I could make a paint ball field out of part of it. how sweet would it be to run around a castle dungeon playing paintball? I'll tell you - very sweet. After BOL I spoke with Bob from Mid-City for a while as I waited for Tiana to pick me up. He talked about meeting Arlo Guthrie and how much he loved Bob Dylan. I hope I have an interesting life when I grow up that I can tell people about. Sounds like I need to buy a castle. Scrubs was on tonight - it was ok, good ending. Best quote:

Ted: "Hey! You owe me money!"

Michelle and I also just found out that there is an escape ladder to the roof of my apartment complex! Hopefully I can see the SeaWorld fireworks from up there.

Now I'm going online to find out more castle information.

Attack of the suds

The dishwasher overflowed with suds this afternoon. It took an army of 4 towels (full size) and many many bowls full of bubbles to defeat this enemy.

Confession:
In the middle of the fight I did take the cat and drop her in the middle of the suds to see what she'd do. She freaked out and started trying to run but the suds and water were too slippery so they went everywhere. Very funny.

Phosphorescent Phrollicing

This evening Tiana, Eric and I had mexican food - we made burritos. Then we watched Stand By Me - during the movie Jamie, Stef, and Rach stopped by. Post-movie I went with Rachel to Coronado and we swam for about 45 minutes in the ocean. We didn't know it until we got there, but the phosphorus just started showing recently - so we were able to swim out in the water and have our bodies glow green/blue. It was amazing. Apparently it's still in the beginning phases and it gets a lot better, but there were times when I was awe-inspired. It seemed like the further out we swam, and the closer to the bottom, the more it glowed. I definitely hope to head back out in the next few weeks to see more glowing waves, bodies, and fish (which scared Rach on a couple occassions).

A brief overview of the week

Let's see - the last few days have been full of ups and downs. I guess I'll do a little journal blogging instead of just linking to various sites, songs, and videos for your enjoyment. Where did I leave off? Who knows - I'll start on Tuesday. Tuesday night was BOL of course: Deron was gone so Enrique from the Spanish speaking congregation drove Pops and I downtown to serve. Colin, Heidi Herman, and Heidi's roommate Theresa (her first time) were there to help when we arrived. It went over well and we got out fairly quickly because we're still not serving seconds. After dropping Pops off here in North Park I biked back here, took a shower, and watched Scrubs with Matt, Brenda, Christie, Michelle, Rachel, and Eric. After Scrubs we sat around and Michelle, Christie, Eric and I talked for a little while. This brought up the discussion of watching Event Horizon. We decided this would be a movie to watch at a later point in the week.

Wednesday was work during the day again, I think we had a meeting, I forget. Wednesday evening around 7pm I rode to the NBH (New Basileia House) for Stef's birthday shindig. It was a cheese theme. Lots of dairy. We watched a movie called Baraka which has video footage of hundreds of different societies in the world - and a lot of times contrasts them with other societies. Very artsy, very cool. Especially when you're watching a bushmen tribe in Africa in a traditional dance while listening to Outkast on the speakers. At 9pm I borrowed Jenn's car and drove to Michelle and Christie's for "You Need Some Learnin'" to find only Michelle, Christie, and John there. A few minutes after starting Adam, friend of theirs, and then Chelsea's husband whom I can't for the life of me remember his name right now... showed up. Good conversation - a lot like the week before.

Thursday work and evening got to hang out with Krista and Whitney for a while. Krista is back from Paris (where she was studying at Columbia) for a few days so I invited her over and we sat and chatted for about an hour. She then had to go meet up with some PL french group people (including Dr. Hadley Wood) for dinner. Whit dropped me off at the mall where I gave my iPod to the Apple store to be looked at. Michelle and Christie picked me up from the mall and we then came over to my place, chatted for a bit, then watched Magnolia. By the time it was over it was definitely time for bed.

Yesterday I sat at the office on 30th street for about an hour waiting for a package from Cynthia to come from FedEx - only to find that the barber shop next door signed for it and had the package. Whit then picked me up from my apt. and we met Matt, Jason and Winter at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. They're in town for Jason's dad's 50th b-day. Today they're going out on some guy's big 3 story yacht. After CBTL we went to Matt and Brenda's where we played Simpsons Road Rage on Xbox and watched all the shorts from The Lonely Island. We headed back to the mall and I picked up my "working" iPod - which I don't think is charging still - then back to Matt and Brenda's. We ate at New York Pizza Department (lame name, good pizza) then watched Kill Bill Vol. 2. I came back to my apartment then met up with Jenn and Scott at Liz's house - which is only a block away - for a house party. I stayed for about an hour then came back and crashed.

Now then. In the meantime of all this I've been checking - as you've seen from my posts this week - on the situation in Grenada. There was never a serious moment of panic or extreme worry around here for Kelly's safety, but when I learned the prisoners from the 17th century colonial prison in St. George, some of whom were arrested in 1983 for a Marxist coup - which set up the invasion by Reagan..., had escaped and were looting and causing a security risk, my heart definitely jumped. A group of Americans, particularly one hot one - as Michelle put it, sticks out like a sore thumb and is just not the best place to be at the time. Luckily we received the e-mail from Kelly's parents this morning to learn she's alright. I'm not surprised at all that she's in good spirits - you'd have to really break Kelly to keep her down.

This week also held Fabrice, Burak and I sending letters, setting up meetings, and making cold phone calls trying to drum up some more work. I'm giving myself until Sept 21 then I'm going to find a part time job to make sure I have some steady income. There are some other business ideas we're playing with - taking over Textile Capital, starting CitySmart, creating a PetSafe program, and another one of my own (raising interest, investors, and a company to purchase a residence in Germany to create a hostel and then renivate to become a B&B - but this is still pretty sketch and will take some looking in to - and a lot of support from people possibly like Whit's dad) - so we'll see where things go.

Peace Corps release

E-mail from Kelly's parents

We just heard from Kelly.  It was wonderful to hear her voice and she sounded in excellent spirits, considering all she's gone thru in the past four days. There was one pay phone working and a long line of people so she couldn't talk very long.

She is well, as are all the 23 peace corps volunteers on the island.  She said it was a very scary thing to go through.  She and the 4 other volunteers were huddled in the hallway of their safe house.  During the height of the storm they heard glass breaking and watched lots of debris and entire roofs fly by.  Her safe house held together but there was some flooding.  She said they went to sleep about 9:30 p.m. and woke up at 10:30 p.m. to discover 2 inches of water on the floor.   They woke in the morning and found part of someone's house on their doorstep.

The Peace Corps country director is on the island and assessing the damage.  Kelly hopes that in the next few days she will learn what the plan of action is for them.  She feels pretty safe where they are, and they have enough supplies for a few days.  She was aware of looting but never felt directly threatened.   She said another island (Trinidad?) has sent over some police-type forces to try to maintain order.

Though our conversation was short, she asked that we contact her friends to let them know she is alive and well.

Please continue to pray for Kelly and all the people on Grenada.  We praise God for keeping her safe and sound.

I just got an e-mail from James - who is currently off the coast of Trinidad. Here's what he had to say:

ya man, everything is alright. we had to go to anchor, which means that we had to go a few miles off shore till the waves and wind calmed... no damage but i heard that some of the other islands had been hit. our tv satalite had been non-functional so we have no real idea what is up in the carrib. other wise things are going well in general. thanks for your thoughts and prayers. God bless ya.- james

Good to hear they're ok - but it sounds like they don't really have any idea of the damage in Grenada or the rest of the Caribbean.

SECURITY CHALLENGES IN GRENADA
Non-essential personnel should re-consider travel at this time

Barbados, Sep 08, 2004: 6:30 pm (CDERA) – The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) has received reports of a serious security situation in Grenada. In response, members of the Regional Security System were deployed and are now on the ground to assist the authorities in maintaining law and order. A second contingent is on its way.

CDERA has also been receiving numerous requests as well as information that many institutions and agencies including commercial interests and media are planning flights into Grenada.

CDERA wishes to advise that only essential personnel can be guaranteed safety of passage at this time and strongly urge other non-essential parties to reconsider travel arrangements to the country until it can be verified that the security situation has been stabilised.

Grenada - Local Reports (Caribbean Hurricane Network)

StormCarib - not to excite or scare anyone about our friend Kelly (and James is in Trinidad as well - very close to Grenada), but this is a site that is giving information about the devastation right now. It sounds very bad for the island of Grenada, especially St George (capitol city where Kelly is), but there have only been 3 reported deaths.

Hi,

I have been in cellular contact with close friends in Grenada since last night and they have said that the destruction is tantamount to Hiroshima. There is not a tree standing. My friend witnessed homes being submerged and thousands of trees and galvanize roofs flying through the air. The island is devastated and I am not sure if everyone is aware of the severity due to networks, electricity and phone lines being out of service. Grenada needs relief workers and Aid as soon as possible.

Gabrielle

Again - this is not to scare people, just to let them know that this area is in need of immediate help and assistance.

Of course all our thoughts and prayers are with our friends, the communities they are with, and their families right now.

A couple dream logs

2 nights ago I had a dream that I had a flight to take to go home. I had to go downtown to get a folder of information with my plane ticket and passport in order to get on the plane. It was a new set of rules that was put in place because of the terrorists. When I got to the airport I was placed in a line and everyone was divided up and had to put on orange or blue jumpsuits. We were in line for the security check when a whistle was blown and everyone had to spread out and face forward. We then had to go through a series of gestures and positions before dropping to the ground and laying perfectly still. Security guards then walked throughout the people and would randomly push a person with their foot or poke them with a stick to make sure they were being submissive. A security guard arrived at me and pushed me with his foot so I didn't move, but then he pushed me harder and I slid into the wall. I was on my side and he kicked me a couple of times until leaning in front of me and talking to me. He took my wallet out of my back pocket and said "I hope you haven't kept anything personal in here because I'm going to find it!" He went through my wallet then threw it on the ground, and then said something in my ear and brushed my head with his hand like he was going to hit me, then again, then thumped my head, then started hitting me in the head. I couldn't do anything about it or he'd beat me so i just sat there. He finished then said "you know why i did this don't you?" and then started to hit me again but stopped half way, but I flinched. "that's why", which meant the reason he did it was to get me to be scared and more submissive. I couldn't see the guard's face until he rolled me over a little more and I realized it was the actor/comedian Billy Mack. Right then there was a large ruckus and everyone got up and started to run away - but Billy Mack wasn't done, so the rest of the dream was about me trying to stay away from Billy Mack and Homeland Security because I was a terrorist.

My dream last night had something to do with a stable and a horse that kept falling on its side. I kept putting the horse back up and spraying it with an non-aerosol bottle of acne medication but it kept falling. Once I picked it up from the other side and realized it had one leg that was deformed and curled up next to its body. There was a lot of scar tissue and most of the hair on that side was gone. I set the horse back down really easily, placed a towel under its head, and petted it. It was going to die. Then someone came and got me and the next thing I remember I was in a race between a couple cars, motorized bikes, and other vehicles on a large city street that went through a farm. All the vehicles were decorated and I lost to a motorized bike.

Crap buckets

Brief rundown of today's activities. Went to bed at 4am - woke up at 11am to Whitney's cell phone call. Whit came over and ate at my place and saw the cat. After that I worked all afternoon by cold calling design studios and working on the CT66 project until Eric got home and we went to Aaron Brothers. I got a bunch of frames at 50 percent off and then we ate at Quizno's for dinner. Came back home and moved furniture, cleaned up, put pictures and paintings on walls, and listened to Third Eye Blind. The problem is this (hence Crap buckets) - Cynthia called me at 8:30pm asking if I could upload the CT66 demo to the Sulic server before she got up this morning for a flight, but I don't have the FTP account info. So I took about 2 or 3 hours looking around trying to open old e-mails or search through old documents trying to find the FTP info. I ended up throwing all the files in a zip file and e-mailing it to Cynthia. Hopefully she can upload them herself - or find the information and give it to me so I can upload it. Tomorrow is when I'll probably head up to Jason and Winter's for the big Labor Day bash. Either tomorrow evening or Saturday morning.

Night's end

Time to sleep here soon. I've been up adding the search function over there for this site, watching Scrubs, and plenty of other time wasting activities. David, what do you have planned for tomorrow? Well, I have to finish some work for Siemens and Sulic, then I'm going to start cold calling design studios around San Diego to drum up some more work. Horray for marketing.

This evening I rode my bike to Rancho's to eat with Rach - I'm glad she had time to eat before work, I haven't really gotten to hang out with her in a while. Mmmm shittake burrito...Tonight at 8:30pm I went with Jenn and Scott to Michelle and Christie's for a "You Need Some Learnin'" meeting. David F, Anya, Nicole, and a few others were there. John (Pastor John) pretty much lead the whole session by talking about Peter and how to read a certain passage that many people use to say we need to "obey" the "state". Pretty much it comes down to realizing we are individual aliens, as Christians, within a political structure that we honor (not fear though, fear is left for God - the holder of power over our lives) and submit to in such a way that it will show the ignorance and stupidity of that structure. For instance: Rosa Parks disobeyed rules by sitting on the bus, but when she was submissive and went with the police in a non-violent manner - her actions spoke loudly and prevailed to show the problems with society. From there we also talked about the abstract realization of freedom versus concrete freedom. Abstract freedom meaning "you are free to become a rocket scientist" but the concrete freedom being "you are free to become a rocket scientist but don't have the capacity to" - this can be translated in to many realms such as education for the poor, health care, etc. We also discussed how this structure of "freedom" is determined by a political ideology based on the understanding that each person is going to do what suits them best - indivisualism. But since the Church is based on community, love, and being in solidarity with those around us, we are immediately removed from such a political structure (both left and right wings - right wing constructing this freedom by giving everyone the equal oppurtunity and left wing working towards producing the capacity for individuals to succeed in these freedoms) and therefore are seen as "evildoers" and "resident aliens". Anyways, it was very interesting and good to be back in a setting kind of like school. I miss schooling sometimes. Who knows, maybe I'll go back for my Masters. John also told a story about today in class he told a girl she looked horrible. Also the first day in class he walked in to the room and threw the syllabi up in the air and walked out of the class - when he got back in, one of the students had picked them all up and placed them neatly on his desk. He just laughed and laughed. He loves rattling cages.

Here's a kind of cool pic I took tonight of the dusk.

Pics from home

Here are a few pictures of my parents house back in OKC. I got back to find a lot of changes - including a new 60'' HDTV, leather couches, new kitchen, screened in patio with TV and DVD player, etc. I guess my parents decided since all the kids are gone they need to get a bunch of fun toys so we'll come back to visit.

I'm retarded

I feel sick to my stomach right now. And it's not because of the amazing Peanut Butter Fudge Chunk Haagen-Dazs ice cream I got from 7eleven for 2.99. No, it's because I just now, after 27 long hours, realized I forgot to watch the season premiere of Scrubs last night. I'm downloading it and will be watching in 4 minute 27 seconds, but I still am very dissappointed in myself. Begin your chastization in comment form.

Working with photos

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to post pictures. Web Photos Pro seems pretty cool because it organizes all the albums, but it's shareware only until Sept 30th, and it also automatically creates thumbnails and resizes images in a sub directory. I guess I could start using iPhoto for everything - but you can't make any kind of heirarchy in iPhoto - and most of my photos are in folders within folders. Ahh aggrevation. BlogWorkz seems to be pretty cool though. It has a nagware thing that pops up every 3 minutes, but if I use it a whole lot I may just end up supporting it. I know, paying for software - completely forgeign to me.

Now that I'm back home I've done more work. I finished our new brochure to be e-mailed and given to design studios to help promote Dodeci as a web solution company, fixed the front index page for Dodeci, and also finished a new intro movie for the site as well. I was productive today. I also went down and served at BOL. We aren't serving seconds anymore so we were done by 8pm!

Yesterday I got my new bike with the help in the realm of finances from mom and dad. It's a Fuji brand bike - one of those combo cruiser/mountain bikes. I sooped it up with some panniers and a rack and trunk and computer and all kinds of stuff. I figure if I'm going to be hauling groceries, books, movies, and whatever else I need, and it's taking the place of a car, it needs to have some storage available. I probably need to find a way to easily take on and off the bags (panniers) so I don't worry so much about getting them stolen. It took me a good 3 hours to get everything situated and paid for, and I think I may have to go back tomorrow - the grip shifters aren't working very well and I need to adjust the saddle a bit.

Around 1pm today I took a ride down through University Heights then up El Cajon and ate at the lebanese restaurant - mmmm falafel, good stuff. After BOL I headed over to the new-sileia house. Not sure what to call that house yet - it's not the Basileia House, but it's not NOT the Basileia House. hmm....

Tomorrow we have a meeting with Bernard from Sphere Concepts. I guess he's wanting to do the marketing and propositions to big companies for websites then have Dodeci actually make the sites. Who knows - he just has to realize we aren't his company. This is the company that Fabrice and David Gregg used to work for. And I guess Fabrice still kind of does. He never wants to fully cut cords or let people in on 100 percent of what's going on. another hmm...

Friday or Saturday I'll be heading up to J and Winter's for a Labor Day Extravaganza.

Anything else?

Oh, and Burak is now in San Diego. Living in the college area.

Sorry

I had to delete some big pictures from the site to make sure that I can continue to upload to my server. If there is a picture you really want that has a broken link, let me know.

Lightning storm pics

OK here's my first album in the gallery.

Now I'm trying out a program called Web Photos Pro. It's a cool program that publishes picture albums to the web - then I can link to them in my blog. Lots better than uploading each picture individually!
