Canada's Baby Seal Slaughter - not OK for the faint of heart.

This year, the Canadian government has given the go-ahead to hunters to bludgeon to death more than 300,000 baby harp seals - that's more than one-third of all those born. This is one of the biggest seal hunts in the country in decades.

Children starving in new Iraq

BBC NEWS:

Increasing numbers of children in Iraq do not have enough food to eat and more than a quarter are chronically undernourished, a UN report says.

Malnutrition rates in children under five have almost doubled since the US-led intervention - to nearly 8% by the end of last year...

... Some 17,000 children die every day from hunger-related diseases, the report claims, which it says is a scandal in a world which is richer than ever before.

Carl is hilarious

Carl Wright deserves a huge nod for this comment on his father's blog post today:

I am your son. How could you spend your time writing this junk instead of nurturing me? We'll see what happens to your feeding tube....... and by feeding tube i mean head..... and by we'll see what happens to your head i mean i am going to destroy you. Have a nice day.

Love,
Carl

Dream Log 03-27-2005

I just read Kallie's dream log from last night, and I forgot to log a good dream I had on Sunday. So here goes:

I was in a studio standing in the back and in the room was 50 cent and three of his posse recording a new song. They were huddled around a really old tape deck on a table and they were facing a wall. I went over and sat by Fitty and listened for a bit, then went back to the back of the room and sat down. Then all the guys started saying "Hey Pookie One, come over here and rap with us" - that was me. So I, Pookie One, went over and put in my two cents worth of rapping during Fifty's spill. I did a lot of "ya Fitty, take it" and "you go, yeeuhhh"'s. They said I was great. Just then three girls came in the door lead by Cameron Diaz. It was time to go do the music video for the song and Cameron was wearing a long trenchcoat jacket made out of candy. Sweet-tarts to be specific. And as I watched her walk around the room the candy would wave and flow back and forth - obviously it was computer generated. Then I woke up.

MTF in SD

Minutes Too Far (Danny, Kris, Steve-O, Blake) were here for a brief few hours this morning/afternoon and here are a few pics from OB. They're at a photo shoot in LA today and then playing a couple shows over the weekend before heading to Oakland to record an album, but I may try and head up to hang out Friday and/or Saturday. Anybody want to make a road trip?

Word from Heidi

Our friend Heidi Herman made a quick decision to spend the next two months in Uganda, Africa with Invisible Children. We just received an e-mail from her:

Hello everyone! I can't believe that we finally made it to Uganda. After about 20 hrs. of flying we arrived in Entebe and then drove to Kampala. We will be staying here a few days and waiting for some more of the group to arrive. The people that met us were wonderful and are taking great care of us. I love it here already it is so beautiful and tropical.

I am learning how to film and it's interesting to always have cameras on. Some of the guys were going to meet with the governmental officials and USAID today. There is currently some conflict here with UNICEF and the gov. because UNICEF has exposed the child soliders that even the gov. army are using. There is tons to learn and absorb. We are going under the title of aid workers for a youth organization for more safety.

The group I am with is just wonderful and so much fun. We are all excited to head north to Gulu and begin work up there. I just wanted to send an email that I arrived safetly. Thanks for all the emails but I really don't think I will have time to email much and especially to check them. So just keep praying. I am so excited and thankful for all ya'll.

P.S the babies are adorable and I've already fallen in love with them : ) And I just spent an hour at the internet and only got one email out. I'm definately in Africa.

I love love love you thanks roomates for the voice box I love it. And family I will try to send another email before heading north I love love love you. Please let me know if I miss someones email. Peace of Christ. heidi

Update

There's been so much going on with family and friends in town that I swear I'm going to forget everything that's gone on. So I think I'll spend a brief moment in review. During my family's visit we accomplished the following: Puerto Nuevo, Mexico for lobster, Old Town, La Jolla including seal beach, tennis with my dad, OB Farmer's market, the world famous San Diego Zoo, Horton Plaza shopping, Fashion Valley Mall shopping, Balboa Park - twice, eating at Cancun's, and plenty of other San Diegan activities which I think they enjoyed muchly. Josh, Kal, Winter, Jason, Ashley, Rachel, Matt, Bren, Scott, Katie, Mark, Kane, Jason, Bonnie, Andy, etc etc etc have all been hanging out the last few days on a few occassions (today was Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Santana's, games at mi casa, Balboa Park, and Nickle City and TGI Friday's in Poway). It's been great being around some of my favorite people these last couple weeks. Doesn't help me get a lot of work done, but I manage. I'll be putting pics of these adventures up ASAP.

Monday I shall be meeting with Fabrice and Burak to finalize some Dodeci paperwork - sorry that the site and e-mails are currently down... I'm also checking out some buildings in SD with Scott to see what may work for a live/work accomodation...

Thursday - the 24th - I'll be having my digital photography shown at the THiN room downtown. I'm going to be using a lot of my nightime shots and Krassy is coming up with some muzik to coincide.

No news yet on Creations Cafe opening - they're still getting the store front put in.

Brad, Heather, Jerremy, and Laurie ended up getting stuck in some bad weather in Arizona and then had conflicts in Pismo Beach with Kyle, so they weren't able to come down here as planned. Too bad. :(

Matt and Brenda have moved apartments. They're waiting to see what happens with Matt's med school applications (on the waiting list at Columbia and waiting to hear back from UCSD) before deciding how long they'll be in the new apartment. As Matt put it tonight - maybe 2 months, maybe 4 years.

Looks like I'm a "shoe in" for the web design adjunct position at Point Loma in the Fall and then web design I and II in the Spring. Nothing's official yet, but Paul called me yesterday and the longer they wait, the more likely it's going to be me. Could turn out to be a great thing. We shall see.

I'm working on a comp design for a package game for XaviX right now - it's a boxing game that's sponsored by Jackie Chan. Kind of funny. I'm designing the box so I'm working with all these pics of Jackie Chan. It may not be used, they're just comps, but it's still funny to me. Waa-poooww.

OK I'm tired, there's more, but will have to wait.

Apartmentally cursed

I went in to talk to Josh this morning and he was watching a local news report about a double homicide in Mission Valley that just surfaced this morning. Apparently two bodies were removed that had been there possibly 2 or 3 days. And where did this take place? Riverfront apartment complex. The apartments that Josh and I moved out of less than a year ago. Yup - last night a guy was shot in front of my apartment complex and today I find that two people were killed in my old apartment complex. Crazy. Oh and I talked to one of the ladies in my complex a little while ago and apparently the guy got shot in the throat, ear, shoulder, and chest. The shooter wrapped a bunch of bee-bees or pellets in some kind of plastic and then shot so it sprayed like a shotgun. It tore some good sized (3 or 4 inches in diameter) holes in the fence and the guy is still in the hospital - apparently they're worried about his voice box.

St. Patty's Day

The fam left today at 2:30pm, so after dropping them off at the airport at 1pm I went downtown to meet with Brandon to pick up some work at 1:15pm, then walked around Horton for an hour waiting for Steve and met with him at Ghirardehli's from 3:15pm - 4:15pm. After taking a look at Deco's I dropped by my house (almost ran out of gas... frightening to think of running out of gas in the middle of downtown in rush hour) then picked up Bonnie, Andy, Kallie and Josh to go to Theo's to eat. Kallie, Josh and I then came back to my apartment to try and find something to do. We were sitting around waiting for Ashley to call and watching Will and Grace, Jeopardy, and basketball when we suddenly heard three very loud, rapid... firings. We waited a second, and then I went to the window - nothing. I watched outside but nobody drove off, ran off, or even came out of their houses. I called the cops and about 15 minutes later 6 cops, a fire truck, and ambulance arrived. Turns out one of my next door neighbors was shot - they carried him out to the ambulance with a neck brace but we couldn't tell where he was shot. From the way they were carrying him it looked like he was ok. The lady that lives a couple apartments away apparently saw a guy run down Boundary street right after the shots were fired. I gave a little testimony report thing, my information, and then a few minutes later Kallie, Josh and I headed down to The Casbah with Ashley. Herms played drums tonight with Bad Credit which was preceeded by PFB - a U2 cover band. On St. Patty's Day. They even had a belly dancer. It was incredible. So funny. And Bad Credit rocked. Funny guys - good improv. Quite the Irish holiday event if you ask me. Neighbors getting shot, police reports, belly dancers, U2 cover bands, and white drunk Funk Hip-Hop rappers yelling about how Bill Gates owes them five bucks.

Widdle Wabbit

Here's a delightful little story from my friend Stephen Reinhardt:

Widdle Wabbit

A precious little girl walks into a pet shop and asks, in the sweetest little lisp, between two missing teeth, "Excuthe me, mithter, do you keep widdle wabbits?"

As the shop keeper's heart melts, he gets down on his knees so that he's on her level and asks, "Do you want a widdle white wabbit, or a thoft and fuwwy bwack wabbit, or maybe one like that cute widdle bwown wabbit over there?"

She, in turn, blushes, rocks on her heels, puts her hands on her knees, leans forward and says, in a tiny quiet voice, "I don't think my python weally gives a thit."

Fam again fam again, jiggidy jam

Saturday my Dad, Eric, and I went up to La Jolla for lunch at Aloha Sushi and to gander at Seal Beach (which we've decided are sea lions, not seals). My Dad took a brief nap (I worked) and then we played tennis for a couple hours and hit up Old Town for dinner. The wait was 2 hours at Casa de Bandini, an hour and a half at Guadalajara's, and we were seated immediately at La Pinata's. Interesting... made us wary of the food - but it was quite good. After dinner we walked back through Old Town and then came back to my place and watched A Mighty Wind and then I worked in to the night. Yesterday I got a call at 7am because my Mom and Corrie were getting in at 9:23am instead of 12:03am - they got to miss their 4 hour layover in Salt Lake City, so I don't blame 'em. They stayed and slept in my apartment while my Dad and I went to church. We then went to Mamma's Bakery and Lebanese restaurant for lunch and to Balboa Park for a while to see the organ concert and the International Houses. The fam then checked in to the Red Lion hotel in Mission Valley and I worked until picking them up for dinner at Island's with the Scholler's. I picked up Drew at 9pm and we just sat around and watched the stupid movies I have on my computer for an hour or so and then he slept, I worked. We're taking off here in about 5 minutes to pick up the rest of the family to drive to Puerto Nuevo for lunch and then back here early this afternoon so I can do some more work before my delightful soiree this evening at my place. Gaye Scholler suggested we drive out to Borego Springs sometime this week - via Julian - to see the desert flowers that are in bloom. Apparently with all the rain we've gotten recently they are spectacular. We'll see...
