I was staying at the Basileia House, but for some reason a family of Asian American immagrants were there. My mom called from Oklahoma City to see if I wanted to see a movie with my brother, whom was also in Oklahoma City, so we both went to the movie theater and met there. Not sure how that happened... we were there to watch a documentary about the graphic design of posters and mix-tapes surrounding the phenom of boxing in the early 1900's. We sat down after looking all over the theater, which happened to be the Apollo Theater so Drew and I were the only white people there, and began watching the pre-show entertainment. There ended up being a 20 minute infomercial on a pair of scissors that could cut through jewlery. The lady would take the egg-shaped scissors and place a ruby or a ring or necklace in it, yell "Scissors!!" and cut through it. I got really annoyed and left. I went back to the B-house and grabbed a piece of wood from the fence and walked around back. I remembered some of the homeless men from the community were staying in the alley behind their house, so i walked around to see if they were still there. They were and they yelled at me for waking them up, but i just walked back to the front of the house. I was really disappointed that I didn't get to see the movie but called my brother and met him at the theater again. We showed up right when it was starting. I noticed all kinds of similarities between the graphic design of boxing and the work Andy Warhol and Basquiat did in the 1980's. Very interesting. I actually woke up thinking how I could mimic popular design in different historical social constructs to form art pieces today. Hmmm....

Went to Pat and Oscar's last week with Jeremy Morgan and a group of us to munch on some brizzead stizicks. Got this picture from Jeremy yesterday.
Just got a call from Matt Alexander and yesterday he was accepted to both the UCSD and the Columbia University med schools. Matt said he's going to accept the spot at Columbia. They'll be flying out in the next month to find a place to live in NYC. Congrats Matt, two amazing school acceptances in one day!

Wipe the tears from your nose and watch this.
I have a prayer request. I just found out this terrible news. Since May 19 President Mugabe of Zimbabwe has been leading "Operation Murambatsvina"--meaning drive out trash--where over 200,000 shacks and makeshift homes have been destroyed by police in an effort to "clean up" urban areas.
By comparison, the Southern California Wildfires of 2003 destroyed over 4,800 homes and other buildings.
Over 32,000 people have been arrested for constructing illegal housing as well. The poorest of the world's poor have literally had their homes stomped to the ground. "Thousands of people who apparently have nowhere else to go are living amid the ruins of their bulldozed homes in the winter chill," one article says. These poor people are "trash" needing to be cleaned up? Many of them are the 760,000 AIDS orphans living in Zimbabwe with nowhere to go. And now they are refugees in their own country.
Do what you will with this information--whether it is writing your congressional respresentative to do something, or what I do not know.
I do know that we, the Body of Christ, are capable of praying for people without homes tonight, people who live on less than $1 a day. Please join in praying for these people this week. I truly do not know what else to do other than to pray in hopeful anitcipation when the justice of our Lord will come and when the poor will be blessed and the hungry fed. And that His will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

Healing the Land and its People
One of the things that makes Floresta special is that we don't just focus on treating the symptoms of environmental degradation and poverty, we work to solve the root causes. The second half of our mission statement, "We teach, we plant, we create enterprise and we share the gospel" reflects the four primary tools we use: Community Development, Innovative Agriculture and Forestry, Credit, and Discipleship.

Read on Pastor John's Blog how the Nazarene church was going to invite President Bush to speak at General Assembly but then withdrew their invitation. When I talked to John about it yesterday he was more than excited.
...the Communion service on that Sunday morning, required by the Manual to take place before the business sessions of the Assembly meets, was recognized by the General Superintendents as too significant to risk cooptation. The Body and Blood of Christ, forming the Body of Christ, prevented other bodies, even the body of the most powerful nation-state of the world, from taking over the agenda of God's people. This is a marveleous and wonderful witness to the love of God in the provision of God's people in the Eucharistic Feast.

Oh yes, and the MXPX concert I went to on Thursday at SOMA was also good. They've been around so long that they're really comfortable and have their act down, such a tight band (musically tight - not tttttyyyygghhhttt). They always put on a good show. I haven't kept up with their last couple CDs, but luckily they only played 5 songs from their album that came out last week and around half of the others I knew. Suprisingly, as Kyle pointed out, they didn't play I'm OK, You're OK. At least we got our Chick Magnet and Punk Rock Show.
Definitely one of the best concerts I've been to in some time, The Faint and Bright Eyes tore last night. The Faint has such a powerful presentation and production with their lights, full sound, and movie imagery that it's like a kick to the ear. The whole place turns in to a dance party. Great, every song was great. Bright Eyes, of course, was a lot more mellow, but still kept a great consistency throughout the show. The video and lighting they used matched the songs and the mood/emotion of each song perfectly. Gotta love it when Conor stands on top of the keyboard for the encore and the guitarist smashes his guitar 6 or 7 times to make sure its dead while the violinist is on his knees next to an electric cellist. Quite the concert, I can't wait til I see either one again.

Well I just checked the archives, and it would appear that I haven't sent an update to everyone in over two months. My apologies for the tardiness of this letter, but I think I was able to see quite a few of you all when I was home for Michelle's graduation (yay sister!) just a few weeks ago, and hopefully we had a more colorful and interesting time than if I had sent you a few words via the internet.
Instead of trying to relay all that has happened in the last couple of months, I'll just fill you in on the highlights and get you up to date...I had a grand time at home in Pasadena and San Diego, full of mostly eating out and seeing friends and family and celebrating Michelle the nurse. The 11 days flew by, and there was only one time when I wished I was back in Grenada: I have learned to operate on Caribbean time apparently (where "be there at 3 means: as long as you show up by 3:30 you are more than on time), and this did not go over well with my tired, hungry family one night when I showed myself just a few minutes (about 30) late for dinner. Mom's look of death propelled me into fond thoughts of Grenadian time concepts, but minutes later we were all happily downing chips and salsa and all was forgiven.
Coming back to Grenada proved to be a bit more challenging than anticipated - it took me about four days to get settled back in my place and to connect again with all of my neighbors and coworkers and fellow volunteers, but by week 2 everything was flowing nicely. Disability Awareness Month is officially over (big sigh of relief) at the Council for the Disabled, but we have a few more awareness activities in June and July that I am looking forward to. We are also working on some new training proposals that will hopefully create employment opportunities for people with disabilities. And life at the Dorothy Hopkin Center is busy as usual - I am trying to start a small Special Olympics program with a few of the residents every other Saturday, and the favorite event thus far is bocce ball. I think I have played twice in my life, so naturally I have plenty of advice to give the athletes.
And outside of the work business, social time has been good. I have started playing soccer with some of the local girls and we train four days/week, which keeps the weekday afternoon/evening pretty full and entertaining. I have only made it to the beach once since returning (the rainy season has officially begun and lived up to its name), but I managed to have quite the kayaking adventure with another volunteer as we underestimated the current, wind, and wave factors on our way out of the bay, making it a tiring, comical paddle-fest back to our serene departure point. And some words to the wise: Kayaks, though sturdy, will tip over if you hit a wave sideways, and your sunglasses will be lost forever if they aren't tied to something.
So life back in the Eastern Caribbean is going very well. I will be attending my first big reggae show tomorrow evening, which I will be resting up for tonight as West Indians don't really start the party until midnight. This is why I haven't attended many shows in my day because I can't hang with that kind of schedule. I hope all is well with everyone back home - it was so great to see you all, and I would love to hear how life is treating you whenever you get a chance to drop me a little line.
Happy Friday liming (hanging out) to all,
Kelly

Bah, because of that trailer I just posted before I went to bed, I had a dream much like that new crump dancing or whatever. But someone kept taking my salt container and kicking it 3 stories high and making it hit the side of Lake Park Elementary. I picked it up and my African mom was NOT happy that I broke the salt.

Seems to be that I will be the new partner in Azra Records and Azra Music. I'll be in charge of the visual appearance of the label, the artists, their websites, flyers, etc. Should be a cool new challenge - I've always wanted to have a record label, so here's my chance!
Currently Azra has a lot of drum and bass, electronic, ambient, "ethnilectual" music. I got involved by seeing Starline Theorie a few times; a couple of the band members used to live next door to the Basileia House. Good stuff. Not all is my style per say, but Azra is also releasing a box set of Samuel Beckett - so it's in no way limited!

Bush Seeks Military Control of Space
With growing budget deficits in the U.S., Congress will have to drastically cut needed programs like Medicare, Medicaid, education, and environmental clean-up in order to pay the growing cost of space weapons technology.
Petco Park Ballpark... in Downtown San Diego that was the cause of the government sanctioned hostility towards the lower income and homeless residents in the area... Nice tune, I think it'll stick.
Yup, I made my first trip to Petco Park tonight to see the Cubs cream our San Diego Padres. The score was 11-1 for a great majority, although in the last couple innings the Padres got a few runs to make it a respectable 11-5 closer. The bleacher seats we had weren't spectacular, couldn't really see much of the game, but it was still fun to be around the sport, the people, and the dogs. It was a "Dog Days of Summer" night at the ballpark, so the place was crawling with mutts. This at least made Brenda excited. Oh, and Sammy's Woodfried Pizza before the game was also splendid.
Post-game I headed over to Heidi, Cassy, etc's house to send off Derek and Erika... and to witness some of the night's insanity.

I'm working more on the syllabus for the web design class this Fall and I'm looking more and more at the css Zen Garden: The Beauty in CSS Design. This is so amazing. Same content - just click the links on the list on the right and see how it changes with a single simple external CSS file. Fantastic. I'm going to make a site that does this. Soon...

By Fiona Apple
I lie in an early bed, thinking late thoughts
Waiting for the black to replace my blue
I do not struggle in your web because it was my aim to get caught
But daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary
Of waiting to be consumed by you
Give me the first taste, let it begin heaven cannot wait
Forever
Darling, just start the chase - I'll let you win but you must
Make the endeavor
Oh, your love give me a heart contusion
Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red
Your hungry flirt borders intrusion
I'm building memories on things we have not said
Full is not heavy as empty, not nearly my love, not nearly my love, not
Nearly
Give me the first taste, let it begin heaven cannot wait
Forever
Darling, just start the chase - I'll let you win, but you must
Make the endeavor

This reminds me of something I've done... oh ya... I fell off a mountain.
Just got back from the day's trip to the Key Club in LA for the In Reverent Fear show. Jeff ended up riding up to LA with us because there wasn't enough room in the van, so it was a little crowded, but we arrived with plenty of time to spare - in other words, catch the game and eat pizza. The first band went on around 8:30pm - called Macro Sync, i think. They were actually quite good. A little hoakey in how much they were trying (all white, the lead singer talked with a British accent althoug they're from New Orleans) but their music was right on. Kind of a harder recant of Devo or some other 80's synth rock. Good stuff though. IRF rocked the house with their new songs. They sounded quite good - it was a great venue for them. The last band was bad, so we left. So without further ado, here are the pics of the evening:

We waited for the concert to start.
