"This is the most important thing I have ever done in my life," Negroponte said on Wednesday during a presentation at Technology Review's Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT. "Reception has been incredible. The idea is simple. It's an education project, not a laptop project. If we can make education better--particularly primary and secondary schools--it will be a better world."

It was a glorious sunny San Diego day (to be said in an Irish accent). After church at Mid-City, a group of us (James, Heidi, Stef, Josh, Alison, and a few guys from PLNU) went to Mama's Lebanese Bakery for lunch, then Heidi, Stef, James and I went to Balboa Park for a couple hours. Heard some organish music, saw the botanicals, played on a large marble crocodile, and then realized James had left to go sailing with Heidi's car key. On his return, I decided instead of sitting in my apartment in front of the computer or TV for the rest of the afternoon and evening, I joined James, Luke, and Christina for sailing on San Diego harbor. After a great couple hours there we went to Anthony's Fish Grotto and then headed back home. James watched School of Rock, I worked. The end of a great Sunday and a great weekend.
This morning (8am) I was awakened by a wood chipper outside my window run by none other than:

Thursday night for dinner I went out to Point Loma for an art department faculty dinner. Quite entertaining to hear how all the classes are going, expectations, tips and insight into teaching, etc. and listen to Jim, Paul, and Karen talk about golf. Javan and I stuck around a little afterwards to talk to Jim about class atmosphere, etc. which was good. Javan's going to start working on his syllabus for the spring course now, so I think hearing what we're doing in my class helped. I did something else on Thursday after that, but I forget.
Friday is when James got in to the SD. I actually had a project interview in Solana Beach for Logo Yes through Aquent which went well - follow up on Monday. I didn't realize it, but they're partially owned by 2Advanced, so that's a cool opportunity. I also had a phone meeting/interview for a place called Emerald Publishing in Poway (through Aquent as well). They need someone with a lot of XML experience, so I'm not sure if that's up my alley or not. I don't have as much Flash/XML experience. Anyways, after I got back to Normal Heights James was here waiting, so we sat around and chatted about what we've been doing the last couple years, fell asleep for a while, and then headed out for the night. We first met up with Josh and Alison (after eating burritos at Niko's) at the Sunshine Club in OB. We were there about an hour and I spent the entire time talking to a guy named Erik that is a national marketing director for Sony Vaio. Lots of work talk. James and I then met up with Heidi and Melissa Perry downtown and spent a couple hours at Confidential lounging, then to On Broadway for another hour to get our boogie on. Note: gangstas don't dance - they boogie. Got back around 3am.
This afternoon (Saturday) I ate at the European Deli on Park Blvd. (mmmm Veggie Diabolou - with fire feta cheese and lemon spiced potatoes) and then Eric and I walked around the Adams Ave. Street Fair for a couple hours. Lots of candid pics there. After a nap this afternoon I went out to OB with Alison and Josh to a future themed party for one of Josh's coworkers. Quite a fun time - interesting people, costumes, music, and atmosphere.

This new camera has come in nicely twice already. It's been stormy the last 24 hours or so (probably the only 24 hours we'll get for the next few months) and I was able to grab my camera real quick to snap these pics outside of my patio. Not as impressive as the pics I took during the lightning storm in OKC, but I was lucky to get the few I did.

Bex and I got in a conversation a few days ago as to what was on our list of "things to do before we die." I said that I really don't have a list because I live in the moment - I try not to focus on what I have yet to do because I'm afraid I would forget what I have done. That got me thinking, so I've started my list of things that I've done in my life. Random, entertaining, exhilarating, stupid, and notable events that make up who I am and what I've become. This is not a brag-list, this is simply a way for me to create a list to remember and appreciate what I've done and continue to do with my life. Don't worry, it's G-rated material.

I've spent the last few hours putting all kinds of new pictures in my flickr account for you. They're all available via the capture section or going directly to my flickr page.
A big 'ol group of pictures from the last couple days of Rach and Jason's wedding (Friday). The wedding was at the Submarine Base on Point Loma. Thursday night was the rehearsal dinner (not pictured) on Shelter Island where we had a barbecue, Friday we had the wedding then the guys partied hard at Jeff and Erin's (did someone say strip-pool?), Saturday we drove up to Whitney's for a celebratory brunch for Whit and Tannan's engagement and spent most of the day in the pool, then Saturday night went to Roundtable for pizza and then bowling. This morning everyone left and I spent the afternoon on Sammer and John Paul's couch watching the Chargers' game. Chillaxing weekend with friends.
Last week Bex was also in town from Boston. Monday I had to teach class (their first project was due so we had an in-class critique) so we weren't able to hang out, but Tuesday we went downtown for a bit, then to Balboa Park, OB, and to hang out at Renee and Chelsea's. Wednesday I was hoping to hang out again, but had work and then class again. After class I went over to Aubrey and Jill's for dinner and watched Blow until about 11pm, then went out to Rancho Bernardo to hang out with Bex at the resort her work put her up at. For those of you that are completely confused right now - Bex is a friend of Jeremy Morgan's that lives in Boston that I met and went to NYC with when I visited a month ago. She was in town for work so she looked me up. Das ist alas fur heute.

My parents left for Argentina for a vacation/conference (Dad) on Thursday. My siblings and I got this e-mail from my Dad last night:
Hi Guys,
We're here in the Paris of South America or the South BA (Big Apple), get it? Everything is going fine. Our plane from Dallas was delayed for several hours but we made it otherwise without problems. Mom went out shopping today (gasp!) and I went to meetings (double gasp!). We saw some tango dancers last night at a big dinner - the dinner was sort of a bust otherwise. Just Mom and I sitting at a table with one Argentinian lady who didn't speak English and the rest were Japanese cardiologists who didn't speak English as well. Lots of sparkling conversation!
Talk to you again soon.
Love,
Mom and Dad

Flash Professional 8 has some nice new additions including runtime filter effects, layer effects, more advanced video importing and alpha channels, and better font variants. Dreamweaver 8 isn't as big of an upgrade, but still has great new tools like code collapsing, better CSS integration, video implementation, and the guides and zoom tools. Check out the complete Studio 8 overview for more info.
Yes, again.
After my stint over at National University was completed I decided to completely revamp the Dodeci website. This is the outcome. It's still concise and streamlined, but it has a lot more work in it and a broader range of my projects from the last couple years. Not everything, mind you, but more. And better, I'd say. I'm beginning to focus more on offline media (such as multimedia presentations, interactive marketing CDs, etc.) but am still up for any projects that come my way. I have quite a few outsourcing freelancers and companies that I use for anything I don't do (video editing, product photography, database programming, etc.) so give me a holler.

When your childhood is spent in Oklahoma, you don't really have the entertainment readily available as you do in other states. Namely coastal states/cities such as San Diego. This is the beginning of what I hope will be a large collection of like-genre photography from growing up in OK and the experiences of creating your own fun and entertainment. Sometimes I'll have a description if it's needed, but if not, let your imaginations lead you where they will... though sometimes you probably won't want to.

Kallie's poems from the last year (or so).
Childrearing
Violence on violence-
makes sense to me;
a great life lesson
for all the kids to see.
Someone does you wrong?
Counter with a bomb!
Punishment is Death,
Peace-a waste of breath.
Surprised to hear the sound
of dying on the playground?
Wise up, man.
You can't shake hands
'til you put your gun down.
Basodee, the Patois (Creole) word for craziness. Ah yes, my friends and family, this word sums up my first Carnival experience. I would love to describe it all for you in detail and to supplement my stories with pictures, but, unfortunately, pictoral evidence is pending (still finishing up the film from disposable cameras), and neither you nor I have the time for such a lengthy email. So some highlights...
The main Carnival activities encompassed five nights, the entirity of which me and a few other volunteers tackled together. The first few evenings we jumped up at some large scale soca concerts (soca loosely described as a sort of Caribbean hip-hop); one of these concerts, "Glow", requires that all attendees dress in white from head to toe so that the Point on which the show takes place "glows" from midnight to sunrise. I had a blast there, decked out in my white ensemble, but my favorite event was probably J'ouvert (joo-vay) morning. J'ouvert started at approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday night/Monday morning (God bless coffee).....about the only way it can be summed up is as a crowded, messy dance party in the street, and I enjoyed every second. My Carnival Crew and I played with the "Red Devils" - this means we dumped red paint all over our bodies and danced behind a truck stacked with speakers and a DJ moving at 0.1 mph for approximately 5 hours. Who knew this could be so much fun? By the end of the exhausting march, we had a rainbow of paint colors mixed in with the red, as well as some motor oil and mud and whatever other substance various bands decided to use for the event. The cleanup portion of this activity was not quite as thrilling, and to this day I am still discovering red paint in the strangest of places in and around my apartment. I am crossing my fingers that my landlady doesn't notice that some of her precious plants have red-brushed leaves.
Monday night hosted yet another large street parade, this one a bit more organized and less messy, with costumes and flashing lights and judging, in which my "band" won first place (a big pat on the back). And Tuesday brought a "last lap" and final street hang out before everyone went back to normal life on Wednesday. Overall it was a grand time, and unless I stumble upon some amazing opportunity in the States or elsewhere that I can't pass up, I fully intend on being here again for the madness next year.
So post-Carnival life is good. The week following the 5 days of straight fun felt particularly long and boring, but things have picked up significantly since then. There are about a million things to do at the Council for the Disabled before Christmas, one of them being participation in an International Craft Show by persons with disabilities that I work with on a regular basis. This show is in Barbados in two weeks, and if all goes according to plan (important details being worked out last minute naturally) I will be accompanying the group on the trip. So I'll let you know if we pull that off. And life at the Dorothy Hopkin Home is same as usual - the residents don't get nearly as much attention as they need or deserve, but they love me just the same and seem to be happy to have a different face around the place a few times per week. And speaking of new faces, Grenada got a new shipment of Peace Corps volunteers - 10 new people arrived about 3 weeks ago, and currently are staying with Grenadian families and doing all of their training. The newbies seem really enthusiastic, and I have yet to spot anyone in the group that could potentially drive me crazy over the next year, which is definitely good news.
So I suppose that is about all to report for now. I hope this letter finds all of you well at home....We have been following the "Hurricane Katrina" stuff from here, and it makes me feel sick and really sad to hear and see all of the devastation and suffering. It is shocking to see how badly a hurricane can damage the "powerful US", and definitely has provoked a lot of discussion around Grenada as yesterday was the one year anniversary of Hurricane Ivan.
Anyway, I send my love to all from here and, as always, would love to hear from you about the basodee you are currently involved in.
Love,
Kelly

I was just told by the President/Chancellor/Founder of National University (the one giving the presentation I've been working on for the last month) that I have to wear shoes to work. I told Keith, the director in the communications department, that he can fire me tomorrow after the luncheon, but he said he can't because I don't work here.
Keith - "You just love to push the boundaries don't you?"
Me - "Sure I do, that's what makes it fun"
Keith - "Not if you work here, it's not."
Keith has to take out all six of his earrings but gets to keep his bald head and devil goatee for work.

I have no idea who this OsirisAni person is, but he has some really funny quotes pages.
One of my students, Rachel, sent me this link to help those in the creative industry displaced by hurricane Katrina. I also found this site by the team over at Archinect. It's always great to see my profession surround those in need - I think it comes from the fact that a lot of creative professionals like graphic designers, illustrators, etc. see themselves more as artists (sometimes failed fine artists) and are tied more to social concerns and have a great respect for life and helping others. It's also interesting to see a site dedicated to one specific industry. Kind of neat.
