She's Only Happy in the Sun

Artist: Ben Harper
Song: She's Only Happy In The Sun

I know you may not want to see me
On your way down from the clouds
Would you hear me if I told you
That my heart is with you now

She's only happy in the sun
She's only happy in the sun

Did you find what you were after?
The pain and the laughter brought you to your knees
But if the sun sets you free, sets you free
You'll be free indeed, Indeed

She's only happy in the sun
She's only happy in the sun

Every time I hear you laughing, I hear you laughing
It makes me cry
Like the story of life, of your life
Is hello, goodbye

She's only happy in the sun
She's only happy in the sun

Something you really outta know

Matt and Brenda are off

I spent all of this afternoon with Matt and Brenda as we watched the movers tape and pack all their belongings. Matt and Bren planned to be out of San Diego around 1 or 2 pm but due to the movers being late, then the amount of protective packing that was done, and the amount of stuff owned, they didn't even get done packing the truck until 6:30pm. After that we went to In-N-Out one last time and said our good byes. There's no doubt in my mind that they'll have a great time in NYC after a transition period, but nevertheless it's tough to see them go. It's crazy to think that we've all been here for so many years and how much has gone on, but now it's time to get on with this whole "life" thing. Matt and Brendafer, you'll be missed. Come back soon.

Pops hospitalized

Dear Congregation ~

Yesterday, our good friend, Pops, was hospitalized. He was at the church but we had paramedics come to care for him when it became obvious that there were major health concerns. Pops is a diabetic and says he has been taking his insulin, but his blood sugar readings were incredibly high (1080).

He is now at Mercy Hospital where they are administering insulin often and have lowered his blood sugar (478 approx) and we think the target number is 140 for a normal high/borderline level.

We are uncertain at this point how long he will be hospitalized or where he will be after (there is a possibility that he will be moved into a Nursing Center) ~ but we will keep you informed.

If you wish to visit or contact Pops, as we lovingly call him, his name to give at the registration desk is Robert Watson.

My brother the physics major

Drew wanted me to give this to my friends to challenge them. Apparently there is one minor higher mathematical error in this equation. Anyone figure it out? I sure couldn't.

Surrounding our brothers

Our church, Mid City Church of the Nazarene - specifically the English speaking congregation, has recently been going through quite a rough patch of our friends and illnesses. Dave and Larry have both recently undergone surgery in the last few weeks and are under constant care. Larry is unable to leave his bed, and even though he seems to be a bit more spirited, his health is deteriorating. Dave seems to be doing better and has quite a bit more energy. Today we learned that our friend Mike Patterson was diagnosed with lung cancer. He entered the hospital over the weekend and the pathologist said it would be a rough road ahead. Unfortunately, today our Bible study went to be with Mike at UCSD and found that there is no treatment that can be done - the oncologist today has given him 3 to 6 months to live. It was an extremely moving time this evening as Mike vocalized just how appreciative he is of our community, our friendship, and our witness. Mike has spent 10 of the last 15 years in prison and is a recovering self claimed "dope fiend". We were discussing his IV drips tonight and he told me he never thought he would need his veins when he was younger. He said he never lost faith in Jesus, but lost all faith in Christians. He wanted God to teach him how he could learn to love God because he hated Christians so much - and it scared him when he used Christians like us to do it. He said our church and the community he's involved in are the only Christians he's ever truly known. His spirits are high, considering, and as Mike looks on the next few months with a lot of anticipation, he believes he will have something great and wonderful yet to learn. He's not sure what, but he's anxious to find out. Mike's faithfulness with the church through things like the cold weather shelter, and his consistent positive attitude, really are an inspiration.

Netflix

So I'm on Netflix now. I went with Netflix over Blockbuster for two reasons. One, because Blockbuster is kind of the Wal-Mart of movie rentals. And they really tried to screw over their clients at the beginning of this year. Secondly because I hear Netflix has a larger collection of more obscure and harder to find films. Either way, you can check out my que here, my recent rentals here, and my recommendations here. Enjoy.

94.9 rox

Yesterday I just happened to be riding in my car and turn on 94.9. Note, that if I am in my car I am almost always listening to my iPod. Now, I do love 94.9 - they play amazing music - but I don't have a long enough attention span to sit through a whole song usually. So I turned on the radio and a new song was playing. I thought the singer sounded like Ben Gibbard but wasn't totally sure. Yup, turns out it's the new single from DCFC's upcoming album Plans, set to release August 30th. I was estatic. Then Hallaran came on and said "that was so good, it's worth playing again" - so he did. And it was beautiful.

Oh-Possum

We all had quite the entertainment tonight at the Basileia House. After watching Rabbit Proof Fence (which, at this exact time, I am making a copy of - I would suggest watching it), Scott went out back to check the cages that have been set to catch the neighborhood stray cats to be neutered tomorrow. There are three traps set, one of which already had been sprung by a fat black cat and was sitting in the back room, covered by towels. Apparently a local vet was given a grant to neuter/spay any cats that were brought in by local residents in the area - and the Basileia House has a freakin' Woodstock sized community of strays under the house. So Scott comes in and exclaims that we caught a raccoon, possum, or "something". Turned out to be a possum, scared so bad that it laid the largest turd in the cage, then while we attempted to release it, continually peed itself. That thing smelled like the inside of a fake leg filled with Indian food. Scott, Jenn and I stood on chairs (while Tiana peered through the window and laughed at us), attempting to open the trap and release the poor guy with a hanger, but the possum had attached itself to the side and wouldn't budge. I finally put on a glove, got on the ground and opened the cage while Jenn tipped the cage upside down, but it clung on for dear life. We set it back down and after a minute or so it darted out and scurried up the side of the latice work in the backyard and perched to hiss at us. That was one scared, ugly varmit. That was the end of the infestation entertainment for the night, we finished up by watching the Buena Vista Social Club.

Trip to Redlands

Decided last week to take a trip up to Redlands to chizzile with my friends Winter and Jason Niemeyer. I took off around 8:30pm on Friday (after dinner with Tiana, Eric, Jenna, Stef, and Shan at Bocca de Beppo's downtown) and got in a couple hours later to Redlands. Played some Masterpiece and played with Google earth, or whatever it's called, for a couple hours before bed. Saturday we woke up, had breakfast burritos, then played bocce ball at the park. Went back to their house for a bit and played darts and what not, then headed over to Anna's parents' house for dinner. They've got a great 3 story, 1891 victorian home her dad is restoring with carriage house (remodeled into an apartment), orchard/garden, pool + hot tub, and an amazing view of Redlands, Oceanside, and 3 or 4 peaks surrounding the valley. Dinner was fantastic, her parents are the nicest, laid back people I've met, and the evening weather couldn't have been better. After dinner we went back to Winter and J's for grilled peaches, a few choice games of ring toss (or whatever you want to call it) etc., and a game of Moods. Today we enjoyed more bocce (sans Medieval Fair), my virgin trip to Trader Joe's, Happy Texas, and 4 Formaggi pizza for dinner. Oh, and Family Guy. Can't forget the Family Guy. Great, relaxing weekend.

Yes, hello to you, too, Lola.

Come one, come all!

Harken thee and heareth of einer story from the Known World. Ineth Redlands of Drybergen, kingdom of Califini, thar she blows a faire fit for thine king! Yup, so while J, Big Dub, and I were playing a rousing game of bocce ball at a park near the University of Redlands, we stumbled upon a Medieval Fair. We spent a good time (an hour-ish) talking to one guy that's been doing it since 1988 and actually will be performing with his band, Al-Samoud (website), at a belly dancing exhibition on Thursday at the Other Side coffee bar that's right down the street from me (perhaps I'll go?). Anyways, he told us all about the SCA (website), his dogs (website) and why he'd rather have a hobby than kids. It was quite entertaining and enlightening. We watched a couple rounds of the combat as well. Quite the interesting, eccentric bunch of people.

FIGHT

Tails? Didn't quite get this one...

Ahh, the King of Drybergen. Apparently this is his sixth reign. Just try and tell me he doesn't look like Christopher Guest!

Silly David, don't you know not to fight Golliath?

The chatty lad with his oud

His dogs that began the conversation. Cute pups.

I was told I could come, gather, and take pictures - even though I was "naked". I also talked to a little boy that wanted to play bocce ball, but his sister reminded him not to talk to "our kind because they make fun of us". Sad.

The man's herald. Two wolves fighting.

Another another one!

On my drive back from Redlands for the weekend I called Whitney to see if I could drop by and say hi since I haven't seen her since she got back from her 3 week trip to Scotland. Well, did she have news for me. I just happened to call a few hours after Tannan proposed. I stopped by for an hour and half and got the scoop. That's right, Whitney and Tannan will be getting married in May. This is after a brief few months in Italy during which he will be working for the Olympics. Tannan and Whitney were great high school friends that, I believe, always figured they would get together even if they weren't on the best of terms at the time being. Rumor has it there will be an engagement party on the 22nd... three cheers and a big congrats to both Whit and Tannan.

Show up early.

Word to the wise - when you have advanced screening passes to see a movie at Mission Valley, be sure to show up plenty early. Alison, Anna, Josh and I showed up to a line of 200+ extra people for a seating of 160 for the 7pm showing of Wedding Crashers. Too bad, I bet it's a good movie. Instead, we went to a coffee house in PB.

Dissappointed and dejected, Anna and Alison sat, awaiting plans.

Jeff and Erin's wedding pics

I accidently left my camera hanging from a tree while cleaning up after the wedding and just received it back today. So here is a grip of pics from the Kane/White wedding 2 weeks ago. A whole lot of fun was had and it was amazing to see all the friends again.

Poker was played. Lost a couple times, but came in first when it counted.

Also played kamakazi ping pong. These are Scotty The Body's battle wounds.

Prepping for the wedding.

Cute flower girls.

OK I considered not showing this one, but it's so funny I had to. Kane let all of us hit his naked body with a ping pong ball at the bachelor party. Good naked times.
