Batman Begins

Apple - Trailers - Batman Begins

Wow: do I love the full screen trailer feature integration with iTunes or what?!?

WinHEC 2005

Even though I'm pretty much a solely Mac user now, I've still gotta keep my updates on PC's to par. Check out the WinHEC 2005 Keynote webcast for information about Longhorn, 64-bit, and other M$ 411.

Fast forward to 1:18:55 to see the Longhorn Visualization and Organization features. Looks like it will rival Spotlight pretty well - especially with the "lists", RSS 2.0 syndication, and virtual folders. Nice. Maybe Apple will come up with some features like this for a Tiger update? I'm not so sure about the Metro file format though. Could be nice, but I have a feeling it's going to hurt my industry when every client wants to have me create everything in Power Point so they can print it themselves. Restrictions to come...

What have you been doing?

I'll tell you. Over the last few weeks I've had quite a bit of work to do. For the last two weeks I've been working on a slide show, media loop, and small web site for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. They have a Pre-AUA conference symposium faculty meet and greet at the end of May on ED. In short - I'm making cooler than Power Point presentations for erectile dysfunction. I have all kinds of facts on ED now (I haven't been reading the text, just copying - I don't want to bum myself out). Working with this stuff definitely makes those spam e-mails a lot more personal. Brandon is now in Spain for two weeks with his girlfriend, a The Bachelorette contestant, and a Maxim model. I've assumed responsibility for the project.

I just finished a feature story layout for Create Magazine, which is a nationally syndicated magazine for designers that just recently started here in San Diego. The story will be out in the Fall edition.

I've been doing quite a lot of PR/client meetings and such as well. Trying to get projects lined up so I'm not out of a job. A few web sites, a few good new contacts, a few good contractors, a few good demonstration/marketing ideas, and a few ideas for new companies. I'm talking to Kallie about making clothes and selling them online sometime soon. Her dad and bro (Travis) have an embroidery company, and Josh's dad does screenprinting, so we have the hook ups.

I have officially signed a contract for my adjunct professor position at PLNU for the fall. Now I'm going through books, articles, and coming up with project ideas and a curriculum/syllabus - seeing as it's a completely new class to the school, I have to create the entire class. I have some good plans, but plenty more to go. Luckily I have more than enough time.

I'm going back to OKC in two weeks for Drew's graduation. I won't be there long - only Thursday evening through Sunday morning - but it will be nice to be back home for a bit. Maybe I'll work in some meetings? Anyone interested?

I recently put some of my art up at the Creations Cafe around the corner from my apartment. It will be up for 3 months and we'll probably have a grand opening reception next month sometime. They're still renovating and adding on, so we're waiting for the dust to clear and the WC to be built. Stop on by - it's on the corner of 30th and Adams Ave.

Photo taken with my new Treo 650. Not bad, huh?

Next week I'm on a panel review for Michael Matosian's graphic design show. A couple weeks ago I went to PLNU for Chris Clippinger's panel. I've had a few other students ask as well, but I just wasn't able to make them work due to lack of notice/time with work. It's great to feel like I'm starting to get back in the department and "the scene". I love being around art, the artists, and just the constant environment of critiquing, consideration, and concept (like that alliteration?). I look forward, though anxious and apprehensive-ly, to the fall semester.

I'll end with a fleeting thought on confidence and ego. Last night I downloaded Tuesday's episode of Scrubs (I missed it because I was at a business meeting with Brandon at The W downtown - thanks for the grub Brandon, tre bien) and watched it before heading to bed. The theme of the show was ego, arrogance, and confidence. I realize I have, even if it's not incredibly obvious to others, a complex of self-confidence. Specifically in the work that I do - both personally and commercially. Mainly for the fact that I'm never satisfied with my own work. I think this is a good thing, though. If I was satisfied with my work I would become laxidasical, content, and never push myself to try anything new or grow. But this also stems from never wanting to let people down. If I walk in to a client's office and tell them I'm the best person for the job, then I end up designing something that's pure crap, and let them down - it ruins me. This definitely comes from my personal life. Even though I'm sarcastic, critical, and at times callous, it still kills me (not literally) when I know I've let someone down or really hurt someone's feelings. I'm a people pleaser when it comes to stuff like that. Now, I'll also not care and try to push people's buttons and attempt something new as often as possible, but it's normally just so people will roll their eyes and breath a sigh of "that's just David." So do I show over-confidence on the outside? Should I become astronomically arrogant? Or should I be coy and allow my work to speak for itself? I suppose I can be both. I'm a situationalist, as I like to say. You aren't the same person you are around your girl or boyfriend as you are around your grandma, why pretend that situations and circumstances don't matter? I guess that's the struggle of living for compliments, cheers, and acceptance - but being awful at responding to them, accepting them, and believing they're always out of obligation.

Dr. Cox [to Turk]: Ego is good, ya dumbass. it's the reason that guy [random patient] wants you to be his surgeon. It's the reason she [Carla] is borderline attracted to you. And it's the reason she [JD] so desparately wants to marry you. Bottom line, in medicine, half of pulling it off is believing you're the biggest, smartest, badass of a doctor to ever walk these halls. You want to see how you end up if you don't believe that?

[Enter room with Doug trapped under a corpse]

Doug: I don't know how it happened again, but it did!

I think that applies... somehow...

And the next line is fantastic:

JD: As I gangsta-leaned down the hallway in the rad new wheels I found by the dumpster, I coudn't help but think how ego effects everything. Without a healthy dose of it, you can't trust yourself to do something you really want... of course with too much ego you can end up losing something you wish you still had... but with the right amount, nothing can get in your way.

Adobe to acquire Macromedia

I think Adobe may soon own me. Not my company. Not my work. Not my possessions. I mean me. As a person. Because now Adobe owns Macromedia.

Scott's b-day party

Although this was a while ago, I just got the pictures off my camera. Scott's birthday was a week ago. On Friday night we went to a sushi bar downtown and pigged out like kings. Quite good. I had mexican style sushi, octopus, and spicy california rolls. All were amazing. On Saturday morning we met up at PB for a birthday Yucca Fest. Spent all day there. And I mean all day. I got burned. Frisbee, hacky sack, a George Dubya pinata, and the yucca were all part of the enjoyment. Good times.

Danny takes the challenge

Here is the scenario: before the concert the band, Eric, and I went to Santana's. Everyone had a burrito (around 1lb each). The time is 3pm. The concert is over around 10:00pm. Danny and Steve-O go to get Arby's. Danny eats a Big Montana (1lb of roast beef) combo (curly fries and drink). The band and then pack up the van/trailer and go to In-N-Out. I challenge Danny. If he can eat a 4x4 combo meal (fries and drink) in under 10 minutes, I'll pay. That's right - Danny Black ate a 1lb burrito, 1lb roast beef sandwich with fries and drink, and a 4x4 (4 slabs of burger with cheese, lettuce, etc) with fries and drink - in a matter of 8 hours. We seriously thought he was going to have a massive coronary right in front of us.

Total time in finishing 4x4 combo challenge: 7 1/2 minutes

Mane Event for Creation Care Week

There wasn't exactly the turnout everyone was expecting at the DRB, MTF, IRF concert for Creation Care week - but mainly because it was in the Greek ampitheatre so it's hard to tell how many people were there. I did count though - and it was around 100. Although it looked like 15. Kind of sad. I didn't hear all of DRB as I was still out with Blake and Kris getting their van serviced before their long trip home, buying sport jackets at Goodwill, and browsing the net at the Bean Bar. MTF was rockin' - since nobody knew them it took a little while for the audience to get warmed up, but actually by the end of their set everyone really liked them. Danny says they played terrible, but don't fret - you rocked out. IRF brought it home as well. Especially their last hard core song. Jared couldn't keep up with his own mouth, but it thrased for sure.

The ONE Campaign

OK I really don't like those new trendy wristbands - but for this cause, I think I'm going to get one. How incredible!

Ann and Tucker do it again

Amazing. Simply amazing. This time it's Canada.

Congrats to Brett

I just talked to Brett tonight and he just got hired to be on the upcoming international Broadway review of West Side Story. He heads out for China in October '05 and will be gone 28 weeks. Going to Europe, East Asia, Singapore, etc. He will be playing the part of Gee-Tar (if I heard him correctly) which apparently has a lot of ballet parts. Fan-frickin'-tastic for him. I hope I'm able to see him perform, it's been years since I've seen him in anything.

Big congrats to Brett Shellenberger.

Punk Rock in the Holy Land

When I was 18 and I went in the army, and I joined the army [as] one of the last people in my class. And by the time I joined the army, I've already buried one friend. And I've buried three more since the years went. But this made my views even stronger. 'Cause... how many people have to die? In order for our people and for the rest of the world to understand the problem? 'Cause I wouldn't want all of my friends to have died for nothing. You shouldn't let blood go to waste like that.

Great documentary. Makes Seattle punk kids look like Rainbow Brite collectors.

Then check out the sneak preview for Jericho's Echo.

Buay Tang

On behalf of Student Development, I wanted to make you aware of the passing of one of our recent students.

We received word today from Bol Lual and Karen Richards the sad news that Buay Tang passed away from sudden heart failure in Lincoln, Nebraska on Monday April 4, 2005. A Medical Examiners report released today revealed that he had an enlarged heart. He died of heart failure and a resulting loss of blood flow. There will be a funeral in Nebraska for Buay Saturday, April 16.

Tom, Buay's brother, and Buay were placed in San Diego as refugees in 1996. Buay was a pre-med Chemistry major graduating in 2004. He is survived by one older brother, 11 nieces and nephews whom he helped to support and two sisters-in-law. He was in Lincoln helping to support the family before continuing his studies in medial school. His brother, Tom, died during 2004 and his parents died in Sudan when he was a young boy. Buay's older brother is now the parent for all the children in the family.

He is a cousin of Tom Chuol (Physical Plant) and Bol Lual (Kinesiology Department custodian).

The Sudanese community is working to provide enough funds to cover funeral and burial expenses. (There was no insurance.)

If you would like to make a contribution, you can send a check to the following 501c3 tax deductible organization. Please write Buay Tang Memorial Fund on the memo line.

The San Diego Lost Boys of Sudan Charitable Corporation
P.O. Box 130713
Carlsbad, CA 92013-0713

Please keep all of Buay's remaining family in your prayers at this time of deep sorrow and severe need.

X-box Modding 101
By Professor Dave-O

Whatever you do, don't delete your xboxdash.xbe file. OK? Stevie and I went to Natebrain's house last night to get my X-box modded and left with it in full working order. We went over to Stevie's (where Shan was watching the James Dean biography - very cool) and hooked up the box to FTP where Stevie then decided to overwrite the xboxdash.xbe file. The X-box hard drive was then broken. We tried a few things for an hour or so, gave up and he came over again today to get it working. He tried hot-swapping the old HDD with the new HDD and then delete/re-copy the old xboxdash.xbd, but when trying to delete the new file it froze. FTP paused, Stevie restarted the X-box with the old HDD, which FTP then saw and deleted the old hard drives HDD. That means we now have two non-working HDDs because we've erased the same file on both. Natebrain is nowhere to be found. HAHA!

PLNU here I come

For all of those interested, I just spoke with Jim Skalman and have officially been confirmed to teach the Web Design I class this Fall at Point Loma Nazarene University. The class will be taught on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00pm - 6:30pm. I believe we'll start off learning basic web design concepts, organization, and then some HTML coding in Dreamweaver, implementing graphics from Photoshop and Fireworks, then possibly some CSS or possibly some PHP. if things go as planned I will be teaching Web Design I and II in the Spring. Web Design II will probably focus on more dynamic page creation, adding Flash elements, etc. "Web Design" is such a broad category though, we'll have to see.

This also comes at a time that I was offered a 6-8 month onsite job with Sunni Mercer in Oklahoma to work on a centennial branding design campaign for the University of Central Oklahoma... I really hope I'm able to work on it, but it's still up in the air. This is a great opportunity but comes right when I'm moving in to a new office space, gathering new clients, etc. As my motto goes - "oh well, we'll see".

MTF in LA

Just got back a little while ago from a day trip up to LA (Canoga Park) to see Minutes Too Far play and hang out for the night. I left around 3pm yesterday, got there around 6pm, grabbed some pizza next door to the Cobalt Cafe (the place where they were playing with 4 other bands), heard a couple of the other bands, then caught some great pics of MTF. Went back to the pizza place after the concert, then back to their hotel with Blake's entourage, played a fantastic joke on Danny (I called as the front desk manager and said I was sending someone up because of a disturbance), then CNN'd the night away. Oh and Kris and I watched Frontline online. Got up this morning around 11am, drove home in an hour and a half, and here I am. OK now check out these rad pics I took last night:

OK so who all checked my site yesterday and fell for believing I was shut down by the court systems and the MPAA? I do know there are a few of you... Al Abut... Jesse Rosten... and especially Andy Gampher.

Yes that's me as a freshman at SNU, with Andy (roommate Freshman and Sophomore year).

Read my IM conversation with Andy HERE. Trust me, it's one of the funniest things I've done in quite some time.

Oh yeah, and I also made Stephen Reinhardt believe his house was broken in to. Ah April Fools Day, why couldn't it be every day? Because I wouldn't get any work done? Ya, probably.
