"Her technique, painting on plastic sheet and transferring the elements onto the canvas as though she were making a collage, allows her to take the painting a step at a time, but to produce what she once called 'a fine surface containing many things compressed'. This is a beautiful phrase. I once described her work as Matissean. But she comes from Brazil, not France. Matisse had to go to north Africa to re-invigorate his art; Milhazes lives in a country where otherness and strangeness can be found at home."
