Same week, same venue, different bands. Last night I pawned off the 7 extra tickets I bought (who knew they would up the capacity and not sell-out?) and met up with Hanna, Morgan, and Kaitlin for the Death Cab for Cutie Show (with Spoon and Mates of State opening). I only caught the last song of Mates, but they sounded alright. Spoon was quite good, but the crowd really wasn't in to it - like most opening acts. DCFC rocked out! I saw them about 5 years ago when they were still on Barsuk, and they were great then - shy, honest, and endearing. Now Ben's got his rock-star digs on and super-fantastic-rock-your-face-off light show, a new found boost of showmanship, and I guess it's harder to believe some of the more "tender" lyrics. Don't get me wrong, it was still a great show and they were incredible live - very tight and energetic, but I guess I was expecting the
coy, nerdy Ben Gibbard with Coke bottle glasses.
After the show we went to the Hyatt and found ourselves at the San Diego 2006 convention. Wha? I guess Primerica was having an event - but all we really know is they had left-over dessert. Then to the service elevator and the Top of the Hyatt for a view of downtown SD.
