Yesterday I learned two things from the homeless men in San Diego. At Bread of Life I heard a man talking to Captain Tom, thanking him for praying for everyone on the streets. He said he knows because of people's prayers and thoughts that they are kept safe. He said also to continue to pray, especially for protection from the police, because "...the police are the only enemy we have out there." He went on to say the rain is bad, but the cops are the worst. That's incredible to think about - the only thing people without a place to live really feel like they need to worry about are the people that are hired to "serve and protect" the community. Maybe the "right of center" would say because they don't pay taxes they don't deserve to be treated properly?
The other thing I learned is there are people that have to be scared of more than just the police. On my way to a meeting in Sorrento Valley I saw a man, probably 20-something years old with a dog, holding a sign on the side of the road in Mission Valley that read:
I may be making up the Kung Fu lessons part, but if he didn't have that on the sign he sure should have.
